A fresh look at the first journey of the Titanic, as presented in a recent National Geographic documentary, uncovers previously unknown details. One of these findings significantly alters a debated moment in James Cameron’s 1997 film depiction.
To begin with, it’s important to clarify that this isn’t about criticizing James Cameron. As the director of Avatar, he also took on the role of filming Titanic, and his dedication was remarkable. He even made 33 trips in a submersible down to where the Titanic lies at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean for extensive research.
The movie skillfully combined real historical occurrences, breathtaking scenery, and a heartrending romance between Rose (played by Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). This blend not only elevated it to the ranks of timeless classics but also made it one of the most financially successful films ever produced.
In adapting such a significant tale for the silver screen, there’s some creative freedom allowed (poetic license), however, one scene based on true events might undergo a significant transformation if recent discoveries hold true.
Titanic scans change major scene in James Cameron movie
Since the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, allegations of bribery and desertion against First Officer William Murdoch have persisted, with the film by Cameron portraying him as firing at passengers prior to taking his own life.
In contrast to previous beliefs, the recently released documentary series Titanic: The Digital Resurrection indicates that Officer Murdoch may have perished while aiding others in evacuating the ship.
The results stem from an extensive study that involved Magellan’s deep-sea imaging firm deploying robots to take approximately 715,000 pictures of a shipwreck. These images were then utilized to construct a detailed 3D digital replica.
It’s been found that the location of the lifeboat winch (similar to a crane) at Murdoch’s station was vertical, suggesting that he was in the process of readying another lifeboat for launch as the ship’s right side was suddenly filled with water.
These disclosures not only clear Murdoch’s name, but they also bring attention to the courage and commitment shown by the crew in the face of the catastrophe.
The information unveiled serves a dual purpose – it vindicates Murdoch and, at the same time, showcases the valiance and determination exhibited by the team during the calamity.
It appears that he was portrayed differently because several witnesses asserted they observed an unidentified officer firing shots at the passengers, and then turning the gun on himself, which caused people to believe it might have been Murdoch who did it.
Although other accounts contradicted this, the film portrayed this as the accurate scenario. This assertion was also made by Second Officer Charles Lightoller, who declared that he had seen Murdoch on the deckhouse roof prior to being pulled under by the sea.
According to analyst Parks Stephenson in the documentary, he explains that the davit (a crane-like device) being raised indicates the crew is preparing to launch a lifeboat.
What you see aligns with the account given by Second Officer Lightoller. This particular davit serves as a silent witness, corroborating Lightoller’s narrative, as its current upright position matches precisely with how Lightoller described it.
