Duskfade Looks Like The Jak And Daxter Spiritual Successor You’ve Been Waiting For

In this week’s Triple-Initiative, there was a diverse mix of genres, but if you’re a fan of nostalgic platformers with a modern twist, Duskfade might have been the standout game for you. Developed by Weird Beluga Studio, Duskfade is set in a world perpetually plunged into darkness. The protagonist, Zirian, a young apprentice from the workshop, embarks on a journey to reclaim time itself in this “clockpunk” realm, which the studio characterizes as an homage to the classic action-platformer games of yore.

The game, named Weird Beluga, was created as a touching homage to the golden era of 3D action-platformers. It not only offers an engaging narrative with deep emotional depth, but it also draws inspiration from iconic series like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank. According to lead programmer Tomás Manzano Sobrido, the game focuses on fluidity and speed in movement, aiming to make players feel as though they are gracefully navigating the world, effortlessly transitioning actions and traversing large distances without breaking stride. This sense of flow is a key priority for us.

In terms of battle mechanics, the creators have acknowledged that games such as Ratchet and Clank and Kingdom Hearts served as significant influences. However, they’re striving to update these gameplay aspects for a more contemporary feel. Fundamentally, the game revolves around the theme of loss, with Duskfade narrating the tale of siblings Zirian and Allira, who are drawn into a puzzling world formed by recollections and sorrow. Additionally, narrative designer Ricardo Chorques Mesa mentioned that the game is deeply inspired by the team’s personal experiences and their journey towards healing and progression.

2026 marks the launch of Duskfade on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Here’s a quick recap of other exciting updates from the Triple-I Initiative: a chilling post-apocalyptic twist to Papers, Please, an upcoming SaGa-inspired update for Vampire Survivors, and the announcement of The Alters’ release date.
