‘My Favourite Cake’ Directors Given Suspended Jail Sentence in Iran for Showing an Unveiled Woman

The Iranian court has imposed a 14-month suspended prison term on directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha for allegedly producing an obscene movie, titled “My Favourite Cake.

The heartwarming romantic comedy, titled “Mahin’s Second Chance,” debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in 2024. This film focuses on Mahin, a 70-year-old woman embarking on a journey to rekindle her love life. Notably, she is portrayed openly in the movie. Since its release, it has been widely distributed, offering viewers a unique perspective into an often underrepresented facet of Iranian society.

Following approximately two years of persistent interrogations and travel restrictions, which impeded them from participating in Berlin events, Moghaddam and Sanaeeha were indicted for producing a film deemed “immoral” and “contrary to public decency.” Additionally, they faced accusations of “propaganda against the government” and other allegations suggesting that the movie was illegally shown without necessary Iranian authorizations for distribution.

The 14-month prison term, put on hold for five years, follows global cinema enthusiasts rallying together in solidarity with the directors. A petition they signed included names like Mohammad Rasoulof, director of the Academy Award-nominated film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” who left Iran in May to evade charges linked to that movie, as well as Pedro Almodóvar, Juliette Binoche, and Hiam Abbas, among others.

The petition initiated by the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (ICFR) could potentially lead to the suspension of their imprisonment.

In addition to the directors, the Iranian court handed down an identical verdict to Gholamreza Mousavi, the producer of “My Favourite Cake,” which involves a financial penalty of 400 million Iranian Rials ($9,400) as well.
