David Tennant Says Former Agent Told Him ‘Don’t Touch’ ‘Doctor Who’: ‘You Don’t Want to Have That Hung Around Your Neck’

If it hadn’t been for disregarding his agent’s counsel, David Tennant might not have embraced the iconic “Doctor Who” character that he is so fondly remembered for.

In the most recent installment of “David Tennant Hosts a Podcast With…,” the esteemed Scottish actor had his wife, fellow actress Georgia Tennant, as his guest. They looked back on David’s professional journey, particularly the moment when he was offered the role of the 10th Doctor in 2005. Georgia shared that writer-producer Russell T Davies and producer Julie Gardner had been considering David for the part following their collaboration on the comedy drama “Casanova.

Georgia Tennant mentioned that things weren’t working out with actor Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. There seems to be some issue there, leading them to search for a new Doctor. However, the show hasn’t premiered yet, so it remains uncertain whether this change will prove successful or disappointing. Tennant recounted her experience: they invited her over, hinting at an episode screening, and then unexpectedly asked if she would like to play the role herself! She pretended to ponder the offer for a while.

As a film enthusiast, I chimed in, “Actually, it ran a bit longer than I anticipated,” to which Georgia responded, “Well, I guess you had that ending planned all along.

David Tennant acknowledged that he “probably would have ended up doing it,” but there was a time when “I certainly hadn’t decided yet” approximately 48 hours following the phone call.

He shared that he needed time to understand the implications, and his former agent, who is now retired, advised him not to mess with it as it wouldn’t succeed. However, it didn’t pan out as she predicted. She had cautioned, “It won’t work; you don’t want to be burdened by it.

Despite propelling David Tennant into stardom and garnering him critical praise, he openly acknowledged that this newfound fame also brought about certain difficulties as he adapted to the intense glare of public attention.

It can be a struggle to adapt, he admitted. All of a sudden, you’re on your own when it comes to figuring out the rules, as there isn’t anyone around to guide or instruct you. This feeling of things getting out of control too fast can be quite unsettling and even cause panic because it leaves you feeling exposed and vulnerable.

David Tennant has provided assistance to other portrayals of The Doctor in handling the character’s stresses, including the 15th and present Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. In a conversation with EbMaster, Gatwa referred to Tennant as a “supportive mentor-like figure,” expressing that he offered guidance on what books to read and which ones to avoid.

The second installment of “Doctor Who,” as reimagined by Jodie Whittaker, will make its debut simultaneously on BBC and Disney+ on April 12.
