Matt Bomer Was Circling Playing a Ken in ‘Barbie,’ but Turned It Down for ‘Maestro’: It ‘Wouldn’t Have Been the Same Experience’ If I Tried to Do Both

If Matt Bomer had chosen to take on both roles, he could have been featured in not one but two films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in 2023. The star of “Mid-Century Modern” shared that he auditioned for a role in Greta Gerwig’s popular comedy, but eventually opted out to spend time with his family. In an interview with Business Insider, Bomer also mentioned that he declined the role in “Barbie” to dedicate more time to Bradley Cooper’s biopic of Leonard Bernstein titled “Maestro.

Though my role in ‘Maestro’ was relatively small, Bradley was incredibly collaborative from the start. The whole process was deeply engaging, and it felt like a unique experience. To jet in from London to film my scenes for ‘Barbie’ briefly and then return to London straight away, I believe that ‘Maestro’ wouldn’t have had the same impact on me as it did.

In the movie “Maestro,” Bomer portrayed David Oppenheim, who was in love with Bernstein, played by Cooper. Although Bomer’s character predominantly appeared in the film’s initial part, he told BI that his experience working on “Maestro” significantly influenced him, potentially altering his acting methods for the remainder of his career on film.

I’m truly thankful for the work methodology I was fortunate enough to encounter,” I expressed. “Had I been attempting to fit it into my schedule, I believe I wouldn’t have had the opportunity.

Previously, Bomer shared with Vanity Fair that he auditioned for “Barbie” by recording a self-tape at home. He explained that he portrayed multiple Kens, each dressed distinctly, and he recorded the other character’s lines on his recorder before giving himself time to respond.

Currently, Bomer shares screen time with Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham in Hulu’s fresh comedy series titled “Mid-Century Modern.” Originating from the minds behind “Will & Grace,” this show revolves around three gay men who find themselves living together following an unforeseen demise. EbMaster‘s TV critic, Aramide Tinubu, highly commended the series, noting that it delivers numerous humorous instances, portrays heartwarming depictions of long-lasting friendships, and features some genuinely charming guest stars.
