Donald Trump is dismissively responding to China’s move to limit the number of American films they screen in their country. The China Film Administration officially announced this reduction on April 10th, following news reports from the previous day. During a press conference shortly afterwards, Trump was questioned about this decision.
Trump replied, smiling and chuckling, “I believe I’ve heard about even more serious matters.” The room filled with reporters joined in his laughter.
Following President Trump’s recent imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese goods, China responded by declaring it would reduce the number of American movies it imports. This action came as a reaction to Trump’s decision to temporarily halt additional tariffs for several countries while increasing existing tariffs on Chinese goods up to 125%. In response, China has imposed retaliatory tariffs at 84%.
In response, the Chinese Film Administration stated that misusing tariffs by the U.S. government against China could lead to less preference among Chinese audiences for American movies. They plan to adhere to market regulations, respect viewer preferences, and slightly decrease the quantity of American films shown in the country.
At present, Hollywood is leading the way on China’s box office rankings due to the tremendous success of “A Minecraft Movie.” This film made an impressive debut by earning $313 million during its global opening weekend. Notably, “Minecraft” became the first American movie to unseat the highly successful Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2,” which has been a box office sensation in China with earnings of $2.11 billion over a period of ten weeks.
It is yet unclear how China will implement its planned decrease in screenings of American films. Originally, the blockbuster “Thunderbolts” from Marvel was scheduled to be screened in Imax format, but it’s undecided if this plan will now change. Other summer movies aiming for Imax screenings include “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and “Superman”.
A representative from Imax shared with EbMaster that they are content with the China Film Administration’s explanation regarding U.S. movie imports. They are very optimistic, considering their long history of business and strong connections in China, that Imax’s diverse lineup of films (consisting of Hollywood, Chinese, and international productions) will remain largely unaffected. The team at Imax anticipates a successful year in China, following their best-performing first quarter in the country to date.
