Comments on the Best Lead Actress in Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie Category (April 3, 2025): The competition for the leading actress in limited series is strong, featuring both established Oscar-winning and -nominated stars alongside fresh talents making their breakthrough. While the usual suspects are in contention, there’s always the possibility of a few unexpected winners.

This year, Cristin Milioti is demonstrating her versatility in the entertainment industry. Following the success of “The Penguin,” where she portrayed Sofia Falcone, a clever daughter of a crime boss navigating Gotham’s dangerous underworld, she has garnered much praise. This was evident when she won the Critics Choice award in February. With an extensive background that includes captivating performances in movies like “Palm Springs” and TV shows such as “Made for Love,” this role might be one of her most challenging yet. Additionally, Milioti can also be seen in the Netflix anthology series “Black Mirror,” in the episode “USS Callister: Into Infinity.” However, acting in genre roles and receiving critical acclaim don’t always coincide.

That’s why early bets are on more “awards-baity” performances in the race.

Michelle Williams currently leads the pack, impressing audiences deeply with her powerful and emotionally charged portrayal in “Dying for Sex.” This role has catapulted her to the forefront as the likely winner in this year’s acting competition. The FX miniseries, adapted from a popular podcast by the same name, narrates the story of a woman diagnosed with terminal cancer who sets out on a voyage of sexual and emotional freedom.

In the recent past, Williams has been nominated for five Oscars, with her latest nomination being for “The Fabelmans” in 2023. Additionally, she won an Emmy for “Fosse/Verdon” in 2019. Her powerful and courageous performance could potentially earn her another award.

Cate Blanchett, who boasts an impressive collection of awards including two Oscars, delves into the realm of psychological suspense in Alfonso Cuarón’s “Disclaimer” with her customary dedication and fervor. Although she hasn’t yet received an Emmy, her previous Emmy nomination for “Mrs. America” (2020) and a lifetime of accolades make her a strong competitor. If “Disclaimer” resonates with voters and Apple TV+ runs a vigorous campaign, it could potentially be the first Emmy for Blanchett, bringing her one step closer to achieving her Triple Crown in Acting. However, she still lacks a Tony Award.

After the top three spots, things are wide open for some surprise entrants.

As Meredith Grey on “Grey’s Anatomy” for almost two decades, I’ve now ventured into fresh pastures with Hulu’s heartwarming series, “Good American Family.” Similar journeys have been taken by other television stars like Renée Zellweger, who returns in Peacock’s humorous sequel “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” and Sadie Sink, who graced our screens in Hulu’s “O’Dessa,” which made its debut at SXSW.
