It’s been confirmed that a television adaptation of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” is being developed for Amazon Prime Video.
The show draws inspiration from a novel titled “Crane Iron” penned by Wang Dulu, which forms part of the Crane Iron Tetralogy. In essence, it’s described as follows:
Set against breathtaking scenery and thrilling combat sequences, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ tells the story of Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two warriors torn between romantic feelings and the lure of modernity. They find themselves in a dilemma: to uphold their traditions or to move towards a shared future.”
“In beautiful surroundings and with exciting fighting scenes, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two warriors who are deeply in love but also drawn by the allure of modernity. They must decide whether to stick to their ways or to embark on a new journey together.
Jason Ning is in charge of creating and overseeing the adaptation, while Ron D. Moore, as well as Maril Davis through Tall Ship Productions, serve as executive producers. Additionally, Johnny Levin, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and Hong Wang and Qin Wang from the Wang Dulu Estate are also involved as executive producers. Ying Lou is serving as co-executive producer. Sony Pictures Television, where Ning and Moore have overall deals, will be responsible for production.
The novel “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” originally published from 1941 to 1942, is part of a series that includes titles such as “Crane Startles Kunlun,” “Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin,” “Sword Force, Pearl Shine,” and “Iron Knight, Silver Vase.” This novel has been adapted for the screen multiple times, with Ang Lee’s 2000 film adaptation being particularly well-known. The movie was a significant success, grossing over $200 million worldwide and receiving 10 Academy Award nominations.

Back in 2023 when Ning sealed his overall deal, it was mentioned that he would start developing a TV series based on the book. Previously, Ning has worked on shows like “The Brothers Sun,” “Mrs. Davis,” “Lucifer,” and “The Expanse.” He is currently represented by UTA, Gotham Group, and Yorn Levine.
For Moore, this represents the second significant IP-based series he’s working on for Prime Video, following his new multi-project agreement with Sony. Back in October 2024, it was announced that he had joined the streamer’s adaptation of the widely popular video game “God of War” as its showrunner. Moore is represented by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.
Deadline first reported the development news.
