Nintendo Alum Reggie Subtly Roasts Switch 2: Welcome Tour Price

There’s been much conversation over the $80 price tag for Mario Kart World, but another topic causing some stir is Nintendo not including Welcome Tour as a free game when you buy the Switch 2 system. Instead, it will be available digitally for $10. It seems that Reggie Fils-Aime, former president of Nintendo of America, disagrees with this decision, hinting at an earlier internal debate about Wii Sports being included free with the console.

This week, Reggie Fils-Aime chose to share old YouTube videos of his interview with IGN from years ago, where he reminisced about his disagreement with Shigeru Miyamoto regarding offering Wii Sports free with the Wii console in North America. Eventually, Wii Sports came bundled with the hardware in North America, but not in Japan. However, Nintendo is currently facing criticism for charging for Switch 2: Welcome Tour, a digital game. For example, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen recently told IGN that the price of this game isn’t “unreasonably high.

At the launch of Nintendo consoles like the Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo typically included bonus games such as Nintendo Land and Face Raiders respectively. But when the Switch was first introduced in 2017, it did not come with any such pre-installed game.

The Nintendo Direct revealed the announcement of Switch 2: Welcome Tour this month. This launch game demonstrates the key features of the upcoming system, allowing players to explore a digital representation of the hardware and test out the new Joy-Con’s mouse controls among other functionalities such as the ones on Switch 2. This has led some people to speculate that Switch 2: Welcome Tour might be offered for free alongside the console at launch.

Nintendo is set to release its Switch 2 console for $450 on June 5. Unfortunately, preorders for this dual-function device in North America have been postponed due to the recent announcement of new tariffs by the Trump administration.
