The title “Gunslingers” may not seem particularly bold, but it’s quite fitting for this movie. Brian Skiba takes on the roles of director, writer, producer, and editor in this Western that carries a familiar feel reminiscent of Corbucci or Leone films. There is no lack of Old West violence and gore, and Nicholas Cage delivers one of his most eccentric performances yet.
Combining its elements, it seems like the makings of a triumphant narrative. Regrettably, “Gunslingers” falls short of its genre’s peak. Persistent flaws persistently pull the film down, even at moments when we are about to be fully engaged. Among these flaws are some insecure acting performances for characters that lack depth. However, what is more aggravating is that nothing in the movie appears even remotely genuine – neither the characters, their relationships, nor the small-town setting where much of the plot unfolds.

1903 saw the debut of Stephen Dorff as Thomas Keller, a New York gangster compelled to escape the city following the murder of a corrupt and influential magnate named Jess Rockefeller. The ensuing chaos also claimed the life of his brother Robert (Jeremy Kent Jackson) – or so Thomas believed. Fast-forward four years, Thomas is in Kentucky living incognito and evading the persistent bounty hunters who seek him due to the substantial price placed on his head by the Rockefellers.
Following a brutal confrontation that claims his horse’s life, Thomas journeys to the minuscule town of Redemption – a refuge for misfits and wrongdoers who have received forgiveness under the leadership of Jericho (Costas Mandylor). Believing he has found a new sanctuary, Thomas is inducted into the community. However, his tranquility is disrupted upon the arrival of Valerie (Heather Graham) and her child, Gracie (Ava Monroe Tadross).
It becomes apparent that Valerie has some relationship with Thomas when Robert, accompanied by a group of 100, arrives on the scene. It’s revealed that not only did Robert survive but he struck a deal with the Rockefellers to return Thomas. Furthermore, he decides to seize the rewards for apprehending other residents of Redemption as well. This chain of events culminates in a standoff, with the townsfolk taking refuge in the saloon and Robert and his group encircling them.

The film is filled with numerous violent confrontations, yet it largely revolves around the character of Thomas finding his place within the town of Redemption. Characters like Jericho’s daughter Bella (Scarlet Rose Stallone), the mysterious Lin (Tzi Ma), the attractive Levi (Cooper Barnes), and others are significant, but it’s Nicholas Cage’s portrayal of Ben, the Bible-reading town photographer who abstains from handling guns, that stands out. The performance is quite peculiar, with Cage moving about erratically, donning unusual glasses, and speaking in a hoarse voice. His acting seems to balance between subtle dark comedy and simply poor performance quality.
I found myself struggling to connect with the characters in this film, as it seemed their development only scratched the surface. The town of Redemption felt artificial and empty, making it challenging to invest emotionally in the narrative. While Skiba’s action sequences added some excitement, they couldn’t compensate for the lack of depth in the storytelling. Dorff and Graham did their best with the material, but “Gunslingers” leaned too heavily on worn-out Western archetypes and neglected the rich character development and immersive world-building that would have made it more engaging.
