Jafar Panahi’s Cannes Competition Film ‘It Was Just an Accident’ Boarded by MK2 Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Movie production company MK2 Films has taken on the project of renowned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, titled “It Was Just An Accident,” a mystery film. This movie will make its debut in competition at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time.

Under the collaboration of Les Films Pelléas, known for “Anatomy of a Fall,” Panahi also worked with Bidibul Productions and Pio &Co. The movie underwent its post-processing phase in France.

The story’s details are being kept secret for now, but its intriguing tagline hints at this: “An apparently small incident triggers a chain reaction of increasingly significant events.

Previously, Panahi attended the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 with his documentary titled “The Year Of The Everlasting Storm,” which was screened in Special Screenings. In contrast, his 2018 film “Three Faces” competed and received the award for best screenplay at the same festival.

MK2 Films plans to showcase “Sentimental Value,” the new movie by Joachim Trier, a sequel to “The Worst Person in the World,” in the competition category as well.

Jafar Panahi, renowned as one of Iran’s top contemporary filmmakers, has achieved global recognition for his award-winning films like “The Circle,” “Offside,” “This is Not a Film,” “Taxi,” and most recently “No Bears,” which received the Special Jury Prize at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.

“Taxi” won the Berlin Golden Bear in 2015, while his “Offside” won the Silver Bear in 2006.

Over the past few years, filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been repeatedly detained by Iranian officials, with his most recent arrest occurring in July 2022 following his signing of a petition against police brutality and subsequently spending several months in prison. In April 2023, Panahi’s travel ban was lifted, allowing him to travel to France before returning to Tehran. It remains unclear if the outspoken Iranian director will be attending Cannes this year for “It Was Just an Accident,” although it appears unlikely.
