Mubi Acquires Joachim Trier’s Cannes-Bowing ‘Sentimental Value’ Starring Renate Reinsve

Mubi has seized the chance to distribute “Sentimental Value,” a film by Joachim Trier, in various regions including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, and India at the Cannes Film Festival of 2025.

In this movie, I’m following the direction of Lars von Trier, who collaborated with Eskil Vogt on the script. This is the same team behind “The Worst Person in the World” and “Oslo, August 31st”. Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning are the stars of this film. As Trier’s sixth production, it is being distributed for sales by mk2 Films. This heartfelt and poignant journey delves into themes of family, recollections, and the healing influence of art.

Mubi collaborated with Trier for a second time, as they had previously distributed and streamed “The Worst Person in the World” in countries like the U.K., Ireland, India, and Turkey.

This company has made its first purchase for Cannes 2025, having been an active buyer of Cannes films in recent years. In 2024, Mubi acquired “The Substance” before the festival started, which boosted Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film to box office success and made it a favorite for Oscar-winning awards that year.

It’s possible that Mubi is gearing up for a bustling market, as they recently acquired “Sentimental Value” during a Cannes press conference immediately following its announcement as part of the 2025 festival lineup by Thierry Fremaux.

This movie is created by Maria Ekerhovd from Mer Film, and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar from Eye Eye Pictures in Norway. Being a collaborative effort between Norway, France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden, the co-production teams include Nathanael Karmitz of MK Productions and Juliette Schrameck of Lumen Production (France), Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach from Komplizen Film (Germany), Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa (Denmark) and Lizette Jonjic for Zentropa Sweden. Additionally, Film i Väst, Oslo Filmfond, and Mediefondet Zefyr are also part of this co-production.

The film is additionally funded by BBC Film in the UK, with Eva Yates as executive producer, alongside Alas Film and Storyline.)
