As a cinephile, I’m excitedly counting down the days until the 78th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival unfurls! This year, the glamorous event will be held in the picturesque French coastal city from May 13 to 24. Last year’s festival was a triumph, with “Anora,” the Palme d’Or winner, subsequently claiming the Oscar for Best Picture. Additionally, films like “Emilia Pérez,” “The Substance,” and “Flow” also garnered significant recognition. Can’t wait to see what this year’s lineup has in store!
2025’s event is gearing up to be a grand affair, boasting a significant Hollywood presence along with numerous celebrities. This week, it was confirmed that Tom Cruise will return to the Croisette for “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” which marks his third appearance following the extravagant premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick” three years ago.
Thierry Fremaux, joint host of the upcoming lineup press conference along with Iris Knobloch, shared with EbMaster last week that the festival received an unprecedented number of film submissions, particularly from the United States. He disclosed that his team was yet to screen 50 movies and finalize the second half of the selection in the six days preceding the announcement. Typically, a few films are added post-conference across various categories, including those competing, and it appears this practice may be more prevalent this year.
This year’s Cannes Festival, often referred to as the initial post-strike event by some, is predicted to feature a significant number of established American filmmakers. Notable names include Spike Lee with “Highest 2 Lowest,” Richard Linklater with “Nouvelle Vague,” Kelly Reichardt with “The Mastermind,” Ari Aster with “Eddington,” and Wes Anderson with “The Phoenician Scheme.” Additionally, the lineup may highlight a few actors who are making their directorial debuts, such as Scarlett Johansson with “Eleanor the Great” and Harris Dickinson with “Urchin.
Earlier news mentioned that Juliette Binoche is set to head the jury, and it’s been confirmed that Robert De Niro will be awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or this year as a special recognition.
