The RPGs Playable on Nintendo Switch 2 – New RPGs, Switch 2 Editions, Upgrades, and More

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is poised to become an excellent platform for Role-Playing Games (RPGs), given the arrival of new titles, upgrades, ports, and more. Our guide will encompass all Nintendo Switch 2 RPGs, taking into account the system’s features as we approach its launch. Keep in mind that the Nintendo Switch is compatible with previous Nintendo Switch games, creating a vast library from the get-go, however, some RPGs may have technical difficulties.

The Nintendo Switch 2 RPGs

Please be aware that this feature does not apply to Nintendo Switch 1 games which receive free updates, but it does encompass games that have Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases and those that undergo full paid upgrades or native upgrade releases. Furthermore, it will provide a list of RPGs based on the information available at this time, with regular updates as more announcements are made and when we finally receive our Nintendo Switch 2 consoles to test out the games for ourselves.”

Borderlands 4

It was quite remarkable when Borderlands made its way to the original Nintendo Switch, so we’re eagerly anticipating how Borderlands 4 will fare when it comes out for Nintendo Switch 2 this year. While the other versions are set to launch on September 23, there’s no specific release date yet for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, with only a general expectation of 2025.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about Square Enix’s debut title for Nintendo Switch 2, which is a polished version of the beloved 3DS classic, complete with fresh mini-games tailored specifically for the Switch 2. Although it appears that certain features have been streamlined, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will provide an immersive experience and pave the way for Bravely Second: End Layer to grace modern platforms.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition

The Witcher 3 continues to be an impressive example of a successful Nintendo Switch port. It’s encouraging to hear that CD Projekt Red will not only release the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition with the Phantom Liberty expansion, but make it available at launch on June 5, with a physical edition that includes the game on a cartridge. This is something that other publishers might want to consider emulating.

Deltarune Chapters 1-4

In simpler terms, you can play the initial two chapters of Deltarune right now, but the complete version (Chapters 1-4) is set to be a paid release and it will debut on Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title on June 4. The subsequent chapters will then be offered for free as updates for this version.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

As an ardent enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2 this year! This version includes the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, along with some tantalizing extra content. Given its seamless play on platforms like the Steam Deck, I’m optimistic that the Nintendo Switch 2 port will deliver an equally engaging experience on-the-go.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Originally launched on PlayStation 4 in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake has since been upgraded with improved features as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, available on PS5 and PC. This revamped edition is set to arrive on Nintendo Switch later this year.

Hades II

In a new development, Supergiant Games’ inaugural sequel, titled Hades II, is expected to debut on both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch following its departure from early access on PC platforms. The forthcoming gameplay for the Switch 2 version has generated positive anticipation. Fingers crossed that it will support cross-save functionality like the initial Hades did a few years ago.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment

Instead of anticipating a fresh Nintendo Warriors title for Switch 2, it’s quite unexpected to get a new Hyrule Warriors game instead. Koei Tecmo’s newly established AAA Studio, headed by Yosuke Hayashi, is working on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The upcoming game appears to offer an experience more akin to what Age of Calamity provided for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild than the original crossover Warriors game. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is scheduled to launch this Winter.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

On June 5, the game “Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess” will debut as a launch title on the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first time that the Japanese-themed Kagura action strategy experience will be available on Nintendo platforms. The game offers gyro and mouse controls for an enhanced gaming experience.

No Sleep For Kaname Date – From AI: The Somnium Files

The Somnium Files, is coming to Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Switch simultaneously. This new release takes place after the events of the initial game, although it’s a spin-off, it offers similar content as a main title. Interestingly, unlike many games released across multiple platforms, No Sleep For Kaname Date – From AI: The Somnium Files will cost the same on all platforms and is scheduled to launch on July 25.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

The upcoming version of Pokemon Legends: Z-A for the Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to be given a specific release date, but its appearance during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct suggests an improvement in both visuals and performance compared to the initial release. This new edition is expected to hit stores towards the end of this year.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army

Raidou Remastered seems to have the essence of a revamped version of Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army, given its new features and upgraded graphics. Originally planned for release only on Switch and other platforms, it has been officially confirmed that it will also be available on Nintendo Switch 2 upon its launch on June 19.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

In the latest Nintendo Direct, it was announced that the hybrid game combining action RPG and life simulation, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, will be releasing a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. This version is also set to be one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th. The updated version of Rune Factory continues to impress with its appealing visuals, as demonstrated in our Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma preview and interview.

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, similar to other RPGs on this list, initially made its debut for PC and Nintendo Switch. However, during the Direct, it was excitingly confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition would also be released. This Nintendo DS remake brings numerous enhancements compared to its predecessor, such as revamped graphics, new personalities, voiced event sequences, and various additional features. The Duskbloods

This upcoming game exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 from FromSoftware is a PvPvE title slated for release next year. Intriguingly, The Duskbloods was discussed at length by Director Hidetaka Miyazaki regarding its gameplay dynamics, role-playing elements, and setting in an interview with Nintendo, which you can find here.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch 2 offers significant technological enhancements compared to its predecessor. These improvements include support for Zelda Notes within the Nintendo Switch App, enhanced performance, higher resolution, quicker load times, and HDR compatibility. This new version will be available as part of a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription but will also be sold separately for $9.99 when it releases alongside the Switch 2 on June 5. A physical edition is also planned. As of now, there’s no word on whether the Breath of the Wild DLC is included in this package or not.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Much like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a significant technological improvement over its predecessor. It offers enhanced features such as Zelda Notes (including QR code sharing) via the Nintendo Switch App, smoother performance, higher resolution, quicker load times, and HDR support. For Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be included at launch on June 5. However, it will retail for $9.99 for those who do not have a subscription when it becomes available. A physical version is also in development.

Wild Hearts S

As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you that the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct unveiled one heck of a surprise with Wild Hearts S! This game, already known for its high-demanding gameplay, is now making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. But That’s right, one more player than the original Wild Hearts, which maxes out at 3 in co-op. Mark your calendars, fellow gamers, because Wild Hearts S is set to release on July 25 for Nintendo Switch 2!

Witchbrook

In simple terms, the simulation and role-playing game titled Witchbrook made a big debut on the original Nintendo Switch, and it was further announced that the game will be available on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 when it’s released this Winter across all platforms. Moreover, Witchbrook allows for multiplayer fun with up to 4 players participating in the game.

Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut

The Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is launching for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, offering one of the top Yakuza games. This version includes 26 minutes of fresh cutscenes and supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second in TV mode on the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, it introduces an online multiplayer mode and restores the licensed opening song “Bubble,” which was absent from previous Western releases of Yakuza 0.

Ys X: Proud Nordics 

As an avid fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the enhanced iteration of Ys X: Nordics, aptly named Proud Nordics, which is all set to hit the Japanese market for Nintendo Switch 2 this year! Dive into a world filled with new features and content. Although Ys X: Nordics previously graced PS5, PS4, and Switch in Japan, this revamped version has only been announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 thus far in Japan. At the moment, no global localization details have been disclosed. Stay tuned for more updates!
