HBO has officially approved Season 3 of The Last of Us, yet its showrunner, Craig Mazin, has sought to calm fan concerns by promising not to replicate the primary mistake made in Game of Thrones – rushing ahead of the source material.
Although the first episode of Season 2 of The Last of Us adaptation on HBO hasn’t aired yet, slated for April 13, it’s worth noting that HBO has confirmed the production of Season 3 as well.
After the initial season, it was widely believed by fans that the storyline of Part 2 would be too extensive to be contained within a single TV series. And now, it has been confirmed that the emotionally charged, post-apocalyptic narrative will continue with additional episodes.
Even though we’ve watched every episode of Season 2 and have lavished it with high praise for its skillfully crafted pain, we’re not going to delve into potential plot points for Season 3. However, one thing that is certain is that it won’t in any way surpass the original source material in terms of progression.
HBO greenlights The Last of Us Season 3
According to HBO’s official Max account on X (previously known as Twitter), posted on April 9th, Season 3 is set to arrive. For the moment, that’s all we know, but it’s clear that those behind the scenes are eager to continue the storyline as soon as they can.
Due to Season 1’s impressive commercial performance, making it one of HBO’s top-viewed shows ever, and its critical acclaim, earning numerous prestigious awards such as multiple Emmys – it’s obvious that HBO is eager for the series to carry on.
The exact length of the story remains uncertain, but based on preliminary statements by showrunner Craig Mazin, it’s quite possible that Season 3 marks the conclusion of the live-action adaptation, at least in the immediate future.
It can’t be for nothing. Season 3 is coming. #TheLastOfUs

HBO’s The Last of Us series won’t repeat Game of Thrones’ mistake
In case you’re considering a third series with just two games under your belt, some apprehension is understandable. Questions about where the narrative might head and if it can surpass the finale of Part 2 may arise. However, let me assure you, we already have a definitive response to ease those worries.
During a chat with WatchinAmerica before the launch of Season 2, Mazin made it clear that he has no intention of venturing beyond the scope of the game under any circumstances.
“The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end. So I’m not going to go past [the games].”
Absolutely, the final season of Game of Thrones faced intense criticism due to its controversial ending because it surpassed George R.R. Martin’s unfinished books.
In terms of future live-action adaptations of The Last of Us, while leaving a small opening for stories that don’t feature Joel, Ellie, or Abby, showrunner Craig Mazin has firmly stated that the primary series will not proceed past the events of the second game.
In simple terms, Season 2 presents unexpected twists, and if you’re familiar with the games, you’re aware of the narrative and what lies ahead. Brace yourself for another season filled with sheer destruction.
