Minecraft Music Will Be Inducted Into The National Recording Registry

The melodies from Minecraft’s soundtrack have been chosen to be included among the “iconic sounds that shaped history and culture,” and they will become part of the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress, much like Microsoft’s reboot chime. The tunes from Minecraft: Volume Alpha by Daniel Rosenfeld are set to stand alongside Super Mario Bros.’ music as some of the most significant video game melodies ever composed.

This year, we have additional entries such as iconic rock and pop albums like Elton John’s groundbreaking Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Chicago’s first release Chicago Transit Authority, the original soundtrack of Hamilton from Broadway, Mary J. Blige’s My Life, and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.

Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, stated that these are the auditory expressions of America – reflecting its diverse past and culture. Essentially, they represent the Library of Congress’ ever-changing playlist for our nation. We take pride in selecting these valuable audio gems, which range from famous music spanning multiple genres, field recordings, historical sports moments, to even everyday sounds with technology.

In a unique twist, Minecraft’s musical score became the second video game tune to be admitted into the Library, following the inclusion of the Super Mario Bros. theme in 2023. Interestingly, this recognition came at a time when The Super Mario Bros. Movie was premiering in cinemas.

The debut weekend of the Minecraft film was extraordinary, outperforming blockbusters such as Barbie and The Dark Knight. It raked in a staggering $163 million within its first weekend in the US, setting a new record for the highest opening weekend for a movie based on a video game, eclipsing even the achievements of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
