The original music score by Ludwig Göransson for “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s new movie, includes collaborations with various artists such as Brittany Howard, Rod Wave, Raphael Saadiq, James Blake, Cedric Burnside, Rhiannon Giddens, and Lola Kirke.
I’m excited to share that on April 18th, Sony Classical and Sony Masterworks will unveil the soundtrack, which includes Göransson’s original score, for all of us to enjoy.
The much-awaited horror-thriller film, penned originally by Coogler, is scheduled in the backdrop of the 1930s Jim Crow South. In this chilling tale, Michael B. Jordan takes on the challenging role of portraying twin siblings.
As a cinephile, I was thrilled to learn that Göransson served as an executive producer for the film’s captivating soundtrack, collaborating with Serena Göransson and Coogler. The first single off this album, titled “Sinners” by Wave, has already seen the light of day, accompanied by a visually stunning music video.
In crafting the score for the movie “Sinners”, Göransson drew inspiration from blues music. He stated, “The music I created for this project is the most intimate of my career. It mirrors my own musical path, expressed through the sound of an instrument that holds special significance for me. I play it on a 1932 Dobro Cyclops resonator, the same guitar that the character Preacherboy Sammie carries throughout the film.
He explained, “The blues’ influence can be found throughout popular music that has been created since then, and we wanted the music for ‘Sinners’ to embody this fact. Not only did we want it to seem authentic and worn-in, but we also wanted it to trace its roots accurately.” He continued, “We weren’t striving for a sense of nostalgia; instead, we aimed for it to feel contemporary. A significant portion of the music was composed and recorded on set during filming, with the cast and crew joining us in the process. This approach gave the movie a sound that links to the past while being vibrant in the present moment. That’s the musical story behind ‘Sinners.’
The main theme song from the score, titled “Why You Here / Before the Sun Went Down,” is currently accessible, boasting the vocal talents of cast member Miles Caton. It’s worth noting that Caton is additionally showcased on the accompanying soundtrack.
Previously, Göransson had collaborated with Coogler on the movie “Black Panther,” where he received an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
