Minecraft Movie Director Spent Time Recovering From How Bad The First Teaser Was

A film based on Minecraft is currently generating impressive earnings at the cinema and may become one of the most successful movies this year. Director Jared Hess, who gained recognition with the low-key hit Napoleon Dynamite two decades ago, was already a fan of the game before agreeing to direct. Yet, nothing could have prepared him for tackling such a large franchise and the backlash fans showed towards the initial trailer.

In a chat with Deadline regarding everything related to Minecraft (including the fate of the Napoleon Dynamite statue), Hess mentioned that the most challenging aspect of the project for him was the teaser’s release, an experience he found himself needing to bounce back from.

He stated, “The project lacked depth in terms of context and had numerous unfinished visual effects shots requiring our continuous work. Additionally, there were several aspects to address. Consequently, we invested a considerable amount of time to overcome that challenging period.” However, he added, “We persevered through it all. We can’t afford to get sidetracked by every comment on platforms like Reddit and allow such feedback to dictate the aesthetic of our work.

Despite his confidence that the film would succeed, it was only after the teaser trailer was released and marketing efforts were fully underway that fans came to perceive the movie in a way similar to how Hess envisioned it.

A fantastic aspect was that we had already tested it, enabling us to identify what worked effectively. When we began releasing materials that genuinely captured the film’s tone in our marketing, the situation transformed dramatically. After that, it felt like we were ready to proceed.

The debut weekend of the Minecraft film was staggering, outperforming heavyweights such as Barbie and The Dark Knight. It not only exceeded predictions but also earned an impressive $163 million in the United States alone during its opening weekend. Globally, it has amassed a total of $323 million as of now. Remarkably, this makes the Minecraft film the record-holder for the largest opening weekend of any movie based on a video game, surpassing even The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
