After the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, one of the main topics of discussion was the cost of Mario Kart: World at $80 USD. This is around $10-$20 more than most big AAA games, leading many to express their thoughts on the price increase. It’s important to note that Nintendo isn’t charging $80 for all Switch 2 games; however, people are curious as to why they’re pricing Mario Kart: World at this higher level.
According to Serkan Toto from Kantan Games, Nintendo is choosing to do this action purely for their ability to do so, and any online controversy will eventually subside on its own.
According to Toto, it’s his belief that they increased software prices throughout these regions due to their confidence in the situation. Nintendo has seemingly anticipated the backlash from some fans, placing a wager that the unrest will subside and gamers will eventually grow accustomed to this new normal price range. And Toto seems convinced that they are right about this prediction.

Toto pointed out that when determining Mario Kart World‘s price, Nintendo might have taken into account broader market trends such as Sony reportedly selling the PS5 Pro for $700 and speculation about GTA 6 costing $100. Additionally, Toto highlighted that Nintendo successfully set The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at $70 in 2023, which was their initial step toward charging this price point, a move not commonly seen in the gaming industry.
If you’re unsure if Mario Kart World justifies a $80 price tag, Nintendo plans to showcase its worth during their Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 17th.
When talking to TopMob, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen explained that they evaluate every game individually regarding its pricing. This is the reason behind Mario Kart World being priced at $80, while some other Nintendo Switch 2 games may have lower costs.
In simpler terms, Trinen mentioned that the price range for the software would depend on the richness of the user experience. As people delve deeper into understanding the game, they are likely to feel eager about the content it provides.
Based on a retailer’s perspective, it may be necessary to increase video game prices to ensure a stable market environment.
Mario Kart World is set to be one of the games available when the Switch 2 is launched on June 5. This game comes bundled with the Switch 2 for $500, although there are speculations that its price could increase because of potential tariffs.
