As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but feel excited about Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s current projects. While he’s busy shooting his latest cinematic extravaganza, an unnamed movie for Warner Bros., starring the renowned Tom Cruise, it’s fascinating to learn that he’s also revisiting his filmmaking roots.
In his upcoming book, Alejandro González Iñárritu delves into the creation of his initial full-length film “Amores Perros,” the acclaimed crime drama that debuted in Cannes in 2000 and garnered an Academy Award nomination, while also marking the emergence of a significant contemporary cinema talent.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Amores Perros” hitting the silver screen, Mack has unveiled a captivating book that shares untouched set images, storyboards, and behind-the-scenes stills from the production process by Fernando Llanos, the movie’s storyboard artist. This unique collection also showcases Alejandro González Iñárritu’s personal handwritten notes and scene breakdowns. The book will feature a fresh perspective penned by Iñárritu himself, along with insights from esteemed directors like Walter Salles (whose “I’m Still Here” was honored with an Oscar for best international film), acclaimed novelists Jorge Volpi and Wendy Guerra, renowned film critic Elvis Mitchell, and Llanos. As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate delving into this intriguing compilation of insights on one of the most impactful films in contemporary cinema.
The book’s launch aligns with an art show in Mexico City, as well as exhibitions at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), Los Angeles, and Fondazione Prada, Milan.
The book is being published at the same time as a display in Mexico City, and it will also be featured in exhibits at LACMA, Los Angeles, and Fondazione Prada, Milan.
The film “Amores Perros,” celebrated for portraying the raw, unforgiving realities of Mexico City’s criminal underworld, weaves together three compelling narratives of aspiration and dread, passion and vengeance. These stories are brought to life by Emilio Echevarría, Goya Toledo, Gael García Bernal, and Marco Pérez. The publishers claim that the film’s unique blend of brilliance and grit is now captured in this new publication, which commemorates the movie’s 25th anniversary with an extensive exploration of its production. Furthermore, they state that the book provides a valuable, behind-the-scenes look into the workings of one of cinema’s most renowned directors.
Following the success of “Amores Perros,” which received the Critics’ Week award at Cannes, Alejandro Iñárritu’s next film, “21 Grams,” brought Sean Penn a Best Actor prize in Venice. In 2006, his movie “Babel” not only wrapped up his “Death Trilogy,” but also won him the best director award at Cannes and seven Oscar nominations. His 2014 film “Birdman” garnered four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, while “The Revenant” secured him another Best Director Oscar, marking his second consecutive win in this category.
The upcoming movie directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, featuring Tom Cruise along with Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman, is scheduled to hit theaters in the year 2026.
Previously, Mack, a company based in London, reached an agreement with A24 for worldwide distribution of their collection of books.
