Zelda Space Project shows concepts of space-themed Legend of Zelda

A fan-created idea for a sci-fi adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” has been gaining popularity on Reddit. Although it’s unlikely that this concept will appear on the Switch 2 in the near future, it certainly looks impressive. The video opens with a brief animation showing Link running across some hills and battling futuristic Bokoblins. His shield transforms into an object resembling Samus’ arm cannon from “Metroid”, and he hops onto a mysterious spacecraft before blasting off into the cosmos. The artist behind this concept is Xabier Urrutia, who initially shared it on Reddit but plans to reveal more of his ideas on Instagram.

Zelda Space Project fan concept is a great idea for the next Legend of Zelda game

In simpler terms, Urrutia clarifies that the Zelda Space Project isn’t about creating a “sci-fi Legend of Zelda” in the traditional sense, but rather a more realistic interpretation. This project is a fresh take on the Zelda series, set within a small solar system where Link will traverse various planets, interact with their inhabitants, and gather assorted helpful items to combat evil forces. The artwork appears to be influenced by animation studios like Studio Ghibli, while also incorporating elements from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom games. Notably, Link’s spacecraft appears to align with the technology seen in those recent games, whether Sheikah or Zonai.

The video offers a quick peek into the solar system as described by Urrutia. Each planet has a distinct characteristic, making it easy to visualize the diverse inhabitants of Hyrule inhabiting these different planets. Reddit user ForkliftSmurf comments, “This seems very much like Zelda Galaxy,” highlighting similarities to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild intertwined with Super Mario Galaxy.

The remainder of the brief video further displays additional artwork featuring various tools such as a rocket launcher strapped to the wrist, a bubble shield, and jet boots. These tools seem to be already inspiring game developers to design dungeons around them. Additionally, the concept art offers peeks into fresh interpretations of Hyrule’s Gorons, who in this portrayal take on a yeti-like arctic form. Lastly, we catch glimpses of enemy designs concepts, including familiar versions like a Lizalfos donning astronaut gear and an imposing octorok.

Numerous comments applauded the notion, suggesting that Nintendo should recruit this artist for their upcoming title. With the blockbuster hits like “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom,” fans have been curious about where Nintendo might take the series next. This idea seems to be one that many would embrace, potentially leading the series into uncharted territory. However, some may argue it strays too far from the fantasy roots of the series. Regardless, I’m eager to see more development on this concept. If Nintendo doesn’t adopt it, it could make an exceptional indie game inspired by the Zelda series!
