The Last Of Us Bosses On Why They Never Considered Recasting Bella Ramsey As Ellie

In a natural and easy-to-read manner: For those curious, The Last of Us Season 2 starts five years after the end of the first season, sparking speculation about whether HBO might recast Bella Ramsey in the main role as Ellie. However, the showrunners have clarified that there was absolutely no possibility of this happening.

“We’ve considered recasting Bella exactly zero percent,” writer Neil Druckmann told GamesRadar.

Craig Mazin, the showrunner, mentioned that neither he nor Druckmann contemplated swapping Ramsey, who prefers using they/them pronouns, with Ellie in their roles.

Mazin noted that he’s been with them for quite some time and has seen them grow from a 17-year-old to a 21-year-old. At their age, four years doesn’t matter much, but the change from 17 to 21 is significant. Bella has grown and developed a lot during this period. It’s amusing because my relationship with Bella was like that of a parent and child. But now, it’s about letting them grow up and become their own person more. This is why Ellie appears older, as Bella is older in real life compared to the character Ellie in the show. In fact, Bella is older than Ellie is portrayed in the series.

Mazin noted: “For us, it’s never been primarily about physical appearance but more about the character’s heart and spirit. I believe they did a fantastic job. Interestingly, we didn’t manipulate their age through makeup or prosthetics. Instead, we simply wrote the characters to be older, and Bella Ramsey brought that maturity to life beautifully.

Neil Druckmann elaborated on the enigma surrounding The Last of Us Season 2, focusing on the events transpired during the five-year interval between Seasons 1 and 2. He expressed admiration for Bella’s acting, stating, “As you watch Bella perform, there’s a sense of maturity in their eyes that… is incredibly subtle yet challenging to execute. Only a select few actors can achieve this level of authenticity.”

This coming Sunday, April 13th, The Last of Us Season 2 will make its debut. According to TopMob’s review, The Last of Us Season 2 has been given a rating of 9/10. Mark Delaney, the reviewer, stated that much like its first season, The Last of Us Season 2 delves deeply into the complex and evolving relationship between right and wrong. If current trends continue, it’s looking like this adaptation could be the best video game adaptation yet.

Season 2 offers some, but not every detail from The Last of Us Part II video game. It’s anticipated that Season 3 (yet to be confirmed) will delve further into the storyline of the game’s second part. If all goes well, a fourth season might continue the narrative as well.
