Canneseries Industry: Soo Hugh, Beau Willimon, Jane Tranter, Eric Rochant, Malin Sarah Gozin to Talk at First Edition

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Beau Willimon, showrunner of Apple TV+’s “Pachinko” and “House of Cards,” as well as Jane Tranter, producer from Bad Wolf and former top exec at the BBC, will be featured speakers at the debut edition of Canneseries Industry. This exciting event takes place from April 25th to 27th.

On Tuesday, the schedule for Canneseries Industry was revealed, mirroring its scope, structure, and aspirations as an expansion of the long-running Writers Club (six years) and the newly launched Producers Club (2022) at Canneseries. These clubs function primarily as platforms for networking and discussions, rather than aiming to establish a market in Cannes to replace the void left by MipTV’s demise.

As a movie enthusiast, let me share some exciting news I recently came across. The esteemed Producers Club, a hub for filmmakers, is set to welcome around 70-75 producers next month, as per the recent announcement by Canneseries. Furthermore, the Writers Club, a global platform for scriptwriters, currently boasts an impressive roster of 19 international and 22 French scribes.

This year, we can look forward to new additions like the Composers Club and Casting Clubs, further enriching this creative melting pot. Additionally, the Broadcasters Conclave promises a closed-door discussion among fiction directors from European public and private broadcasters, tackling the pressing issues of the current industry landscape.

It’s an incredible opportunity for collaboration, innovation, and learning, and I can hardly wait to see what emerges from this vibrant gathering of talented professionals!

Soo Hugh, who shares the role of showrunner for AMC’s “The Terror” along with Ridley Scott, has been scheduled for a Q&A session on April 25th.

On the 25th of April, Willimon will initiate the first session in Canneseries Industry’s conference strand. He will be joined on the 26th by Rosalie Cimino, leader of Anonymous Federation, and Marie Roussin, creator and showrunner of “Voltaire High.” They will engage in a discussion about the topic of Sharing New Responsibilities.

Additionally, the esteemed ex-fiction controller at BBC, Tranter, is scheduled for an interview on April 26th, marking the 10th anniversary of her production company Bad Wolf, renowned for series like “His Dark Materials” and “Doctor Who.

Discussing “The Bureau,” which has recently undergone an American remake on Paramount+ with Showtime’s “The Agency” starring Michael Fassbender, its creator Eric Rochant – a renowned French showrunner – will be part of another Q&A session on April 27. The speakers will discuss the rapidly changing landscape in the television industry, which although experiencing some post-Peak TV market stability, is still grappling with the effects of AI and its ongoing disruptions.

At the leisurely-paced Canneseries event, American executives find a valuable chance to connect with representatives from European television networks. These European networks have experienced a gradual decrease in budgets over recent years, unlike their counterparts in the U.S. who often face more drastic cuts. This makes Canneseries an attractive setting for U.S. executives seeking to secure European investment.

At the Canneseries Broadcasters Conclave, networks such as NRK and TV2 from Norway, YLE from Finland, Streamz from Belgium, ZDF from Germany, France Télévisions and Canal+ from France, RTS from Switzerland, and HOT from Israel have been confirmed.

The following individuals have been officially confirmed as producers: David W. Zucker (“The Good Wife”), Clelia Mountford (Sunburnt Penguin, previously known as Merman Productions, associated with “Bad Sisters”), Xavier Marchand (Moonlight Productions, known for “A Gentleman in Moscow,” “Nautilus”), Simon Cornwell (“The Night Manager,” “Little Drummer Girl”), Lorenzo Gangarossa (“Notre Dame on Fire,” “Conclave”), Alex Boden (“Tokyo Vice,” “Cloud Atlas”), Sharon Hughff at Scott Free Productions (formerly at Left Bank), and Amelie von Kienlin (Amusement Park, “Munich Games”).

Canneseries seems poised to showcase the remarkable European terrain where tiny nations often surpass expectations significantly. Finland, in particular, has as many as seven series featured across various categories. Streamz, a Flemish streaming service, boasts five Finnish shows, two of which are in competition and another pair outside competition, sharing the limelight with “The Walking Dead: Dead City” and J.J. Abrams’ “Duster.

One notable figure in Belgium’s television industry, Malin-Sarah Gozin, who was instrumental in adapting her 2010 series “Clan” into Apple TV+’s “Bad Sisters,” will delve into “Dead End.” This captivating piece is bound to spark conversation at Canneseries, where it’s set to compete in the main category. It centers around an individual with a unique ability – the uncanny talent of being able to witness a person’s final moments upon touching them. With a murderer on the loose, this character often finds himself consuming the remains of the victims to aid the police in their investigations.
