The Shocking Truth Behind Minecraft Movie’s Herobrine Easter Egg

In the movie version of Minecraft, there’s a subtle wink towards the Herobrine myth – however, the film’s producer clarified that this nod might not have been deliberate.

Video games have inspired several chilling and memorable creepypastas, such as Ben Drowned, MARIO, Sonic.exe, and one of the most renowned gaming legends is that of Herobrine.

Creepypastas like Ben Drowned, MARIO, Sonic.exe, and the popular Herobrine legend were born from video games.

Or, in a conversational style: You know those scary stories based on video games? Stuff like Ben Drowned, MARIO, Sonic.exe, and that famous character called Herobrine are all part of that world.

In 2010, a Minecraft player initially posted on 4chan that they encountered a character resembling Steve from the movie adaptation (played by Jack Black), but this version had bright white eyes. Subsequently, other players began reporting similar experiences, usually spotting the figure at a distance or in quick, fleeting instances such as when someone rounds a corner or delves underground.

In the movie, people anticipated finding some allusion to Herobrine due to its numerous hidden references. However, the manifestation of this was unexpectedly unique.

A Minecraft Movie producer explains Herobrine Easter Egg

In a short sequence from the hypothetical film ‘A Minecraft Movie’, an Enderman character induces a trancelike condition on Steve, causing his eyes to emit a bright, eerie light while uttering disturbing phrases.

It appears this could be connected to Herobrine, yet it’s not exactly so. The Mojang Studios creative director, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, clarified the Easter egg’s reference on his social media platforms.

He mentioned on X/Twitter that it was unexpected since all the characters’ eyes were supposed to be purple, but during the final rendering, one character’s eye consistently appeared white instead. Since the visual effects studio ran out of time, they decided to leave it as it was in the final version.

In an unusual turn of events, we found that all characters’ eyes were intended to be purple, but during rendering, one character’s eye consistently appeared white in the final frames. Given the VFX studio ran out of time, we decided to keep it as it was, resulting in a character with a white eye.

Ever since those eerie glimpses of Herobrine, there’s been a chilling tale circulating among gamers. It suggests that Herobrine isn’t just some random entity, but the spectral form of a deceased player – none other than the late brother of Notch, the genius behind Minecraft.

Regrettably, despite how intriguing it might be, Herobrine is merely a fictional character. In 2010, Notch clarified this on Twitter, stating, “Herobrine doesn’t exist in any form. I don’t have a brother (I do have a half-brother I’ve never met…), and he’s not part of the game.

In a playful manner (possibly as a jest), the update notes published in May 2011 appeared to verify the elimination of Herobrine. One can only speculate, but perhaps he’s still lurking somewhere.
