Evolve Studios has revealed the initial glimpses of “Posthouse,” the first directorial project from Nikolas Red, which was just completed in Manila. This supernatural horror movie delves into the Philippines’ forgotten silent film era by weaving a contemporary ghost tale. Now, it’s moving into post-production with ambitions to hit this year’s film festivals.
“Mikhail Red, a renowned independent filmmaker, has announced that they’ve completed production on his brother’s first feature film. He’s eager for the post-production phase and is looking forward to exploring potential screenings at film festivals. The goal is to release this movie in 2022.”
In this chilling tale, I find myself diving into the world of a tormented film editor named Cyril, portrayed by Sid Lucero from Netflix’s “Outside.” Alongside him is his estranged daughter, Rea, played by Bea Binene from Amazon Prime Video’s “Nokturno.” As we work together to complete an unfinished silent horror movie, we unwittingly release a legendary creature. The ensuing events promise an edge-of-your-seat experience!
Mikhail Red expressed his enthusiasm for Nikolas’ original and imaginative perspective on cinema history and horror. He saw great promise in the endeavor following its development with producer Iana Bernardez, and after they presented it collectively at the Udine all genres project market, which is part of the Far East Film Festival.
As a movie enthusiast penning down my thoughts, I found myself captivated by “Posthouse,” a film that resonates deeply with me due to its genesis in a personal anecdote during the editing of the 2018 horror masterpiece, “Eerie.” Furthermore, this cinematic gem was nurtured and enriched through my exploration into the forgotten cinematic legacy of the Philippines.
The director shared that they had a personal reason for creating a chilling movie in a post office. While editing the horror film ‘Eerie,’ they encountered an unsettling outtake which left a lasting impression on them. This eerie experience continued to haunt them, ultimately inspiring the storyline for their first-ever directing project.
Nikolas Red delved into exploring forgotten silent movies and was astonished to discover that no Philippine silent films exist anymore. This loss – of a cherished piece of cultural history – served as the heart of his story. In essence, this movie can be seen as his tribute to the spirits of our cinematic past.
Iana Bernardez directs the movie known as ‘Posthouse’, which is also overseen creatively by Mikhail Red. This production is a collaborative effort between Evolve Studios, Studio Viva, and Viva Films.
The project has received substantial backing for its growth throughout its course. It all started at the NAFF Fantastic Film School (2020), where the idea was initially formed. After that, it moved forward through Full Circle Lab Philippines (2022) with financial support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines. In the same year, “Posthouse” earned international acclaim at the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) during BIFAN 2022, winning both the VIPO Award and Asian Discovery Award. These accolades brought around $15,000 in funding for the project.
