Original: YouTube Premium’s early subscribers are experiencing an increase in their subscription fees following more than a decade of enjoying a discounted rate due to being grandfathered in.
Early adopters of YouTube Premium are now facing higher subscription costs, which is a result of them having been on a lower price for over 10 years as part of the grandfathering deal.
In the year 2014, YouTube Music Key made its debut, providing a number of features that later became part of their premium service, such as uninterrupted music playback without ads and the ability to listen to music in the background.
Those who joined during the beta period were charged $7.99. After that, the price rose to $9.99.
Four years later, in the year 2018, YouTube Premium made its debut priced at $11.99. By the year 2023, subscribers who initially had Music Key for $9.99 saw their price increase to $13.99. However, the original beta testers were given an exception and kept their subscription rates as they were originally set.
For more than a decade, beta testers maintained their $7.99 subscription fee, despite YouTube repeatedly raising its prices. Yet, this arrangement is no longer holding true.
YouTube Premium’s most loyal users are having their subscription prices jacked way up
9to5Google reports that some beta testers from 2014 have started getting emails notifying them that the $7.99 subscriptions they had will soon be terminated.
“The individual posted on Reddit that they’ve had a YouTube Premium family plan since before YouTube RED was launched, back in the Google Play Music era. Regrettably, they received an email announcing a significant price hike of around 2.12 times, taking it up to 320 Mexican Pesos (approximately 16 USD) per month, starting from August.”
Two other users received notifications via email about an upcoming price hike for their services. The new monthly fee will rise from the current rate of $7.99 to $12.99, which represents a substantial 62% jump in cost.
“This is peak dystopia comedy,” another slammed.
Et tu, YouTube?

It’s puzzling why YouTube seems to be raising prices for some users right now, however, it’s important to mention that YouTube has introduced a more affordable option of Premium at $7.99, which was the initial price for the beta version.
With Premium Lite, users can’t enjoy ad-free music streaming, nor can they play songs in the background or save videos for offline viewing at a later time.
The introduction of Premium Lite in the US coincides with free users expressing growing dissatisfaction over the abundance of ads on the platform and stricter policies against ad-blockers. In certain instances, these users were even subjected to unavoidable 60-minute ads. Simultaneously, YouTube increased the price of Premium, causing some families to pay approximately $500 yearly for their subscriptions.
