For the very first time, the MTV Video Music Awards, which have traditionally been aired on MTV and related cable channels without a live broadcast, will be shown on CBS in 2024, as revealed by the network on Thursday.
The show is scheduled to broadcast on CBS and simultaneously on MTV, as stated in the announcement. It will take place at UBS Arena on September 7 from 8-11 PM Eastern Time or 5-8 PM Pacific Time, depending on your time zone. This special event can also be watched live on Paramount+.
The change aligns with similar decisions taken by broadcasting networks lately. For instance, the CMT Music Awards will be aired live on CBS for the first time in 2024, instead of CMT, which is a departure from its usual practice (though this particular special took a break this year).
A live, one-hour pre-event is set to air on all Paramount Media Networks. It seems that CBS has indicated that among the Paramount networks, only MTV will simulcast this live broadcast along with CBS.
Last year’s VMAs, broadcasted outside of CBS, boasted impressive ratings. The network celebrated that it garnered the largest combined viewership across multiple networks in the past four years. Additionally, they claimed that these VMAs had the most socially interactive audience in the show’s history, with a total of 66.7 million social interactions tracked.
As of now, we’re five months away from the show’s broadcast, and so far, specifics like nominees, hosts, and musicians performing haven’t been disclosed apart from the confirmation that it will take place at UBS Arena.
2025’s show is being overseen by Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic from Den of Thieves as executive producers. Barb Bialkowski serves as co-executive producer, while Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba take on the roles as production executives. Wendy Plaut handles celebrity talent, and Lisa Lauricella manages music talent for the show.
