Glen Powell is putting on his running shoes and sprinting for survival in the exhilarating first preview of “The Running Man,” which is director Edgar Wright’s take on the dystopian action-thriller that played a significant role in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rise from weightlifting champion to Hollywood star. Paramount Pictures, the studio responsible for this remake, unveiled a sneak peek of the movie during their presentation to cinema owners on Thursday at CinemaCon.
In this scenario, Powell is portraying a character who’s fallen on hard times, choosing to participate in a lethal game show. Unlike “American Idol,” where the stakes are singing talent, here contestants must outrun SWAT teams and drones trying to track them down. The winner walks away with cash, while those who lose meet their end in the morgue.
In simpler terms, Colman Domingo, portraying the sinister host of a well-known show, declares solemnly. “This isn’t a game…it’s about survival, life or death,” he emphasizes. “Remember, this is America and we don’t tolerate nonsense.
In a nonchalant manner that leaves showmakers yearning to cast him as a competitor, Powell exudes an air of experienced fatigue. Moreover, he possesses extraordinary speed, effortlessly clearing banisters and shattering windows. Prior to unveiling the film’s trailer, Powell confided in theater owners that creating this movie was “the most challenging endeavor I’ve faced throughout my life.
“I’ve had my body thrashed and smashed,” Powell added.
The movie is based on the 1982 novel, sharing the same title, authored by Stephen King under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Known for his unique storytelling in films like “Baby Driver” and “Shaun of the Dead”, Wright takes the director’s chair from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall, having previously worked together on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”.
In an interview with Empire, Wright described his film as having many aspects of a road trip story: a tense, perilous journey. The narrative follows Powell’s character as he traverses various settings, encounters diverse individuals, and struggles to endure for thirty days amidst the wilderness.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that an upcoming film features a stellar cast including Katy O’Brian, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Jayme Lawson, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, William H. Macy, and Sean Hayes. Mark your calendars for November 7, 2025, as that’s when you can catch this cinematic gem on the big screen!
Powell has emerged as one of the most promising new talents in Hollywood, demonstrating his box office appeal with the summer blockbuster “Twisters” and the romantic comedy released in 2023 titled “Anyone But You.” With the upcoming action movie “The Running Man,” he could potentially further boost his high-profile career.
