Renowned Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti experienced a heart attack on a recent Wednesday, as per Italian media outlets, and is said to be receiving critical care in a stable state.
71-year-old eccentric filmmaker, performer, and scriptwriter, who was awarded the 2001 Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for “The Son’s Room,” was taken to Rome’s San Camillo Hospital in the afternoon for surgery. According to Italian news agency Ansa, he is now in a stable condition.
Moretti previously suffered a mild heart attack in October last year.
Renowned for his sharp moral critiques and social observations, Moretti recently participated in the Cannes Film Festival of 2023 with the high-concept meta-comedy “A Brighter Tomorrow”. In this production, he takes on the role of a Roman film director who is working on a period film set in Rome during 1956.

Prior to his admission to the hospital, he had been working on the early stages of a fresh movie project; specifics about it remain undisclosed.
Moretti frequently bases his films on his personal character, playing the main role since his 1976 Super-8 debut “Io Sono un’Autarchico” and its sequel “Ecce Bombo,” which comically reflected the discontent prevalent in Italy during the somber 1970s. Notably, “Caro Diario,” released in 1994, was his autobiographical work that propelled him to international fame. Other notable works include the biting satire “The Caiman” from 2006, which targeted Silvio Berlusconi, and “We Have a Pope,” where he portrayed a Pontiff grappling with a crisis of faith.
Last month, Moretti was present at a showcase of his films at the Bari International Film & TV Festival located in southern Italy.
In 2024, he received the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival for the restored version of “Ecce Bombo,” which was shown in the Venice Classics section, garnering much acclaim.
