Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’ Debuts Sexy, Thrilling Trailer at CinemaCon as Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson Tease: ‘Things Are Not Always as They Seem’

Things are not always as they seem.

The fuzzy essence of “Verity,” a film adaptation based on Colleen Hoover’s literary phenomenon, features Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett in its cast. On Wednesday evening, Amazon MGM unveiled its captivating first trailer during their presentation to cinema owners at CinemaCon.

Titled as a “gothic, psychosexual thriller,” this narrative unfolds with renowned author Verity Crawford (Hathaway) sustaining severe injuries in a tragic car accident. With her highly anticipated novel nearing its deadline, her husband Jeremy (Hartnett) hires an aspiring writer named Lowen (Johnson) to complete the remaining books in the series for a substantial fee. Eager to accept the task, Lowen soon discovers a hidden truth: an unfinished manuscript that suggests troubling revelations concerning Verity and her family’s past. As Lowen delves into this draft, she is faced with the challenge of deciding whether Verity is a skilled fictionist or a potentially dangerous psychopath.

The unseen trailer initiates with Verity and Jeremy crossing paths for the first time at a bar. As he approaches his future spouse, who is adorned in a captivating red dress, he remarks: “In just 45 minutes, you’ve had three drinks. If you continue at this pace, I might feel awkward asking you to depart with me.

Verity accepts the offer, telling the bartender, “I’ll have a water.”

Subsequently, the video leaps forward to the current moment, revealing Verity lying incapacitated following a distressing event, now dependent on someone to feed her meals. It is during this time that Lowen arrives at the couple’s secluded dwelling, planning to stay there temporarily to finish an unfinished novel.

“You’re the only writer who can do this,” Jeremy tells Lowen.

In a rather unexpected turn of events, while Verity lay mostly immobile, Jeremy finds himself falling in love with Lowen. However, their relationship doesn’t unfold as smoothly as they might have expected. For instance, one heated moment between them on the couch takes an alarming twist when Lowen notices blood on her lip. Upon closer inspection, she discovers that instead of kissing Jeremy, she had inadvertently kissed Verity. What a shock!

At that moment, a detective questions me, “By any chance, are you currently writing the next Verity novel?” To which I respond, “Indeed, it’s shaping up to be my finest work so far.

Hathaway, Johnson, and Hartnett did not travel to Las Vegas to unveil the initial footage of “Verity”. Instead, they collaborated with Hoover and director Mike Showalter to create a video clip that served as a sneak peek for the movie, emphasizing its on-screen enigma.

In Las Vegas, Hathaway, Johnson, and Hartnett were not present for the debut of “Verity”‘s first footage. Instead, they, along with Hoover and director Mike Showalter, prepared a video to pique curiosity about the movie by highlighting its intriguing plot.

“My character Verity Crawford is an accomplished author with a tragic past,” Hathaway hinted.

“Or is she?” Johnson interjected.

Hartnett stated, “Jeremy Crawford is a dedicated husband, always working to safeguard his wife’s memory.

“Or is he?” Johnson teased.

Without a doubt, witnessing ‘Verity’ on the big screen will offer fans the long-anticipated communal viewing experience,” Hathaway assured.

The movie titled “Verity” will be premiering in theaters on May 15, 2026. As per Amazon MGM’s distribution head Kevin Wilson, this film is a sizzling, suspenseful thriller that makes for an ideal kick-off to the summer movie season.

2018 saw the self-publication of “Verity,” which gained immense popularity, remaining on the New York Times bestsellers list for several months and selling over a million copies by 2023. This marks another one of Hoover’s novels to receive cinematic adaptation following the unexpected box office success of Sony’s drama “It Ends With Us” during the summer. A movie based on Hoover’s book “Reminders of Him” is currently under development at Universal Pictures.
