In the upcoming sci-fi adventure “Project Hail Mary,” Ryan Gosling portrays a former science teacher who reluctantly takes on the role of an astronaut, deviating significantly from his usual Ken-like appearance and adopting a more intellectual, nerdy demeanor. This intriguing character transformation was hinted at during Amazon MGM Studios’ presentation to theater owners at CinemaCon on Wednesday.
As I conversed with the government official, Sandra Hülller, she’d asked me to embark on a perilous space voyage – a task more dangerous than walking on the moon, something I admittedly lack the skills for, saying, “I’m afraid I don’t possess the ability to moonwalk.
The movie, a screen adaptation of Andy Weir’s popular book with the same title, chronicles the journey of an average man who is informed that he possesses the abilities needed to explore the far reaches of space. Gosling tells Hüller, “You have the right qualities,” but Hüller replies, “I have the unsuitable traits.
Despite his hesitation, the circumstances are critical. A disaster looms that could drastically alter his familiar world. “The fate of all depends on you,” Hüller urges him.
In the trailer released by Amazon MGM Studios, Ryan Gosling along with his compact crew are depicted floating in space, marveling at a stunning array of celestial bodies. The backdrop to this scene is the melodious tune of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo known for hits like “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street,” and written by Drew Goddard who adapted Andy Weir’s book “The Martian” into the successful film starring Matt Damon, “Project Hail Mary” appears to blend humor and grandeur much like its predecessor.
Gosling mentioned that the story is incredibly challenging and expansive, which aligns with our usual projects, after showing a preview of it.
That’s why we watch movies,” he pointed out, “not only because I’m part of it, but also because I’m one of the producers of this film.
Weir’s novel’s rights ignited a fierce competition among studios, with MGM Studios being the ultimate bidder before their acquisition by Amazon, securing it for $3 million. More recently, Gosling played a leading role in this year’s blockbuster “Barbie,” and shared the screen with Emily Blunt in “The Fall Guy” last summer, a film that received positive reviews but struggled to resonate with viewers.
“Project Hail Mary” will open in theaters in the United States on March 20, 2026.
Unlike many other streaming platforms, Amazon MGM Studios stands out among theater owners by guaranteeing the release of more than a dozen movies onto their screens. This move is designed to demonstrate the company’s dedication, which was emphasized by Gosling, Lord, and Miller during CinemaCon. They underscored that “Project Hail Mary” should be experienced on the big screen.
Unlike other streaming services, Amazon MGM Studios has earned favor with theater owners by pledging to send over a dozen movies to their cinemas as a show of commitment. This commitment was highlighted at CinemaCon by Gosling, Lord, and Miller who emphasized that “Project Hail Mary” should be enjoyed on the big screen.
Both versions convey the same meaning but the second one is slightly more concise.
“We tried to put it on a TV once and it didn’t fit,” Gosling joked.
