David Fincher is overseeing a follow-up to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” with Quentin Tarantino penning the script for this sequel, which won an Oscar. EbMaster verifies that the unnamed production is being developed at Netflix, where Fincher has a prior arrangement. Brad Pitt will once again portray Cliff Booth, the stuntman who may have been a wife-killer.
This upcoming production stands out in several ways: firstly, it’s a sequel to a film directed by a well-known director, and secondly, the property has moved from a theatrical studio to a streaming platform. This change is significant as it was announced during CinemaCon, the movie theater industry’s annual gathering in Las Vegas. Quentin Tarantino initially released “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” with Sony Pictures in 2019, but he secured ownership of the film’s copyright after a certain period. Given that this sequel is being developed under David Fincher’s deal with Netflix, it seems probable that Tarantino may have already retained the rights to any potential follow-ups.
The project is now moving forward as Quentin Tarantino abandoned ideas for what could have been his 10th (and supposedly last) film, titled “The Movie Critic.” A script was developed and Brad Pitt was set to star in the main role. The narrative was reportedly set in the ’70s and centered around a movie critic who wrote for an adult magazine. There were whispers that Pitt would portray a character similar to his “Once Upon a Time” persona, Cliff Booth, who, as revealed in Tarantino’s novelization of his own work, demonstrated a keen interest in films.
In this upcoming project, Brad Pitt will once again take on the role that earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This venture marks a reunion with director David Fincher, as they’ve collaborated on some of their most critically acclaimed films such as “Se7en”, “Fight Club” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” It appears less probable that Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie will return to their roles in the sequel.
Although Tarantino is primarily known for his role as a writer-director, he has also penned scripts that he didn’t ultimately direct, such as Tony Scott’s “True Romance” and Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk till Dawn.” Conversely, Fincher has directed two films for Netflix, both of which bear similar themes to this latest project. These include the Hollywood-set period piece “Mank” and the gritty working-class thriller “The Killer.
Initially, The Playlist broke the news about the upcoming sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” However, Netflix chose not to provide a statement regarding this matter.
