Today, without any April Fool’s Day trickery, Haste – a fast-paced rogue-lite game where you’re racing against a crumbling world – has been launched on Steam. Originally known as “Haste: Broken Worlds,” the developers at Landfall have now simplified its title to just “Haste.” During February’s Steam Next Fest, Haste created quite a stir but did not reveal a release date. However, contrary to our earlier reports that suggested the demo would linger post-Fest, it appears fans of the demo didn’t need to wait long for the full game experience. If you haven’t heard about Haste yet, the demo is still available on Steam for free.
Speedrunning rogue-lite Haste is out now on Steam, it’s not an April Fool’s prank
The group known as Landfall, who have previously produced indie successes such as Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, the quick-tempo Clustertruck, and were last year’s publishers for the popular cooperative game Content Warning, didn’t announce a release date for their new game Haste. Thus, discovering it on Steam today came as an unexpected surprise. However, given that today is April 1st, it seemed plausible that this sudden release might be some sort of prank or hoax. Fortunately, it turns out to be genuine.
The demo of the game, titled “Haste“, offers an incredibly gratifying demonstration of swift third-person movement in video games that I’ve come across. The levels are dynamically generated and the objective is straightforward: reach the portal on the opposite side of the map before the collapsing environment overtakes you. Be mindful to steer clear of objects, dodge traps and hazards, and gather sparks to invest in enhancements. By mastering your altitude, perform a precision landing; a better landing increases your speed, rewarding you with extra sparks at the end of each level.
In these crumbling realms, you’ll encounter a host of distinctive non-player characters to engage with. As you conquer stages, you’ll move forward on a path that branches out, allowing you to choose your next destination. At certain points, you’ll find campfires where you can heal and chat with a chance character, or you might stumble upon shops for buying enhancements. There are also testing grounds where success could bring significant rewards, but failure may cut your journey short prematurely.
If you shy away from a game labeled “rogue-like,” don’t dismiss it so quickly. This game does have a narrative and progression to explore. In the complete version of the game, there are ten shards to collect. Each shard can only be accomplished in a single playthrough, which is where the rogue-like aspects appear. Essentially, you’ll find an overarching story with characters, worlds, and powers that persistently develop as you progress.
In a daring maneuver, no matter the context, a sudden, unannounced launch, such as a “shadow drop,” can be quite risky. However, the demonstration of the game “Haste” on Steam garnered an Overwhelmingly Positive score with 97% positive reviews from close to five thousand players. Currently, you can find “Haste” on Steam for 20% off and it has already accumulated 378 player reviews, 93% of which are positive. As more individuals discover that this isn’t an April Fool’s Day prank in the coming days, we will observe if the full release manages to maintain the same level of success as the demo.
