Steve Kornacki Exits MSNBC for NBC News, Sports as Spin-Off Nears

NBC gets Steve Kornacki in the divorce.

Kornacki, who is well-known on MSNBC during election periods for his data analysis, will be moving his skills to NBC News and NBC Sports as the parent company Comcast plans to separate most of its cable channels into a separate business called NBC News, according to confirmation received by NBC News on Tuesday.

Nick Kornacki will maintain his position as chief data analyst for both the news and sports departments, a role that involves a long-term partnership, as confirmed by sources privy to the situation. Previously reported by The Los Angeles Times, this change is imminent. In the future, it’s expected that Kornacki will appear on “Meet the Press,” and he has previously helped hosts during “Football Night in America” and other sports broadcasts with statistical analyses and more.

The shift implies that NBCUniversal is examining their workforce to identify the most suitable employees for each platform. For instance, Andrea Mitchell has recently moved from her long-standing MSNBC program to NBC News.

Since Kornacki is hired as a contributor instead of a full-time worker, he has the flexibility to pursue other jobs outside NBC that won’t clash with his news and sports duties within the media group.
