2024 saw an unprecedented spike in job cuts within the gaming sector. Many affected employees found solace in the phrase “hanging on until 2025,” as they hoped that by then, large-scale dismissals would become history.
Regrettably, these aspirations proved fruitless in the case of Eidos Montreal studio, renowned for their work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Eidos Montreal is currently under the ownership of Embracer Group, a company that’s been grappling with financial difficulties since 2022. Over the past two years, this corporation has faced significant challenges, resulting in job losses and the closure of numerous studios. Among these closed studios are Pieces Interactive (responsible for games like Magicka 2, Leviathan: Warships, and the remake of Alone in the Dark), Free Radical Design (known for the Timesplitters series), and Volition, famous for the Saints Row series.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern when hearing about the recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal this year. It seems that this isn’t an uncharted territory for the studio, as Embracer Group, their parent company, has navigated similar waters in the past. Back in January 2024, they made a decision to scrap the upcoming installment of the Deus Ex series, which unfortunately resulted in the dismissal of no less than 97 talented developers from the team.
Currently, Eidos Montreal is aiding the Playground Games team in developing the latest edition of the Fable series. It remains uncertain whether the studio is simultaneously working on a project of their own as well.
