In 2023, J.J. Abrams’ gritty crime thriller “Duster,” Season 2 of AMC Networks’ “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” and Paramount+ with Showtime’s “The Agency” will premiere at Canneseries. Critics who claimed the French TV festival would flop without MipTV or its attendant buyers were proven wrong, as this year’s lineup shows it continues to attract significant series and celebrities.
Title “Dead City” premieres for the first time, while “Duster” seems to follow suit – set to stream on Max starting May 15. Featuring Michael Fassbender, “The Agency” debuted on Paramount+ on November 29, although it hasn’t been released in France yet, where there’s a great deal of anticipation as it represents the American adaptation of the classic French spy thriller “The Bureau.”
or even shorter:
“Dead City” and “Duster,” both premieres. Stream “Dead City” on Max from May 15. Michael Fassbender stars in “The Agency,” which debuted on Paramount+ but hasn’t yet been released in France, where it’s highly anticipated as a US adaptation of the popular French spy thriller “The Bureau.
Notable stars anticipated to grace the Festival’s red carpet include Norman Reedus, best known for his role as Daryl Dixon from “The Walking Dead.
On April 28th, the Konbini Award-winning actress from “Bridgerton”, Nicola Coughlan, will conduct a workshop or seminar.
Actors Josh Holloway, Sam Claflin, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are scheduled to attend the Cannes Film Festival, where they will each promote their respective projects. Josh Holloway is promoting “Duster,” a European mega-series, Sam Claflin is presenting “The Count of Monte Cristo,” another large-scale European series, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is showcasing “Dead City.” All of these productions are out of competition at the festival.
On Tuesday in Paris, it was revealed that the Canneseries’ selection features fewer prominent American series compared to the highly acclaimed 2024 edition which showcased Disney+’s “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” and Apple TV+’s “Franklin,” as well as premiered Amazon Prime Video’s “Fall Out.” The European debut of “Fall Out” also took place during this event.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve noticed a shift in the industry trends:
In these cost-conscious times, U.S. streaming platforms are becoming less keen on shelling out for flights to transport stars from the States to Europe for multiple projects. Instead, they’re increasingly leveraging events like Canneseries and other prestigious European festivals to showcase locally produced series with potential global appeal. This strategy could be a game-changer in the international market.
This year, Netflix and Apple TV+ won’t be premiering any series at the Canneseries festival, as reported by the festival’s artistic director Albin Lewi, due to scheduling issues regarding major productions.
Instead, in addition to “Duster,” this year’s Canneseries will feature series for the first time from Warner Bros. Discovery. These include two shows from Max France – the Roma community-focused action thriller “Malditos” and the soccer-themed show “Maintenant ou jamais, FC Montfermil.” Additionally, there’s the YA social misfits drama “nOOb,” hailing from New Zealand.
Apart from “Duster,” we’ll see new series at Canneseries this year, especially from Warner Bros. Discovery. These include two shows from France – “Malditos” about the Roma community and a soccer-themed show called “Maintenant ou jamais, FC Montfermil.” There’s also a drama about social misfits for young adults (YA) called “nOOb,” which comes from New Zealand.
Amazon’s Prime Video launches Season 2 of one of its major French productions, the explicit “Escort Boys,” and the Belgian period crime drama “The Big Disruption,” which has potential to appeal widely due to Prime Video’s backing. Meanwhile, Netflix supports “Kun by Aguëro,” a biographical series about the Argentine soccer legend, that carries significant weight in the Canneseries Rendez-vous section.
Lewi mentioned that if Mip TV had moved from Cannes in a previous year, it would have been a bigger hurdle to overcome. However, he pointed out that our latest events were exceptional, featuring top-tier U.S talents, major series, and an intriguing lineup. Furthermore, he noted that this year, Canneseries received more series submissions compared to last year.
Furthermore, Lewi suggested that Canneseries isn’t primarily focused on physical buyers, but rather “buzz.” He explained that being selected for the event generates word-of-mouth, which can significantly impact the market, even if actual buyers aren’t present. He also noted that many professionals in our industry play multiple roles and that all series are backed by international distributors.
There’s positive buzz surrounding competition series titles “The Corsican Line” from Canal+/Studiocanal, marking the reunion of “Mafiosa” writer-director Pierre Leccia and Mediawan’s Image et Compagnie led by Nicole Collet, as well as “Reykjavic Fusion,” starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“Trapped”), co-produced by Erik Barmack. This project is the first to enter production from the new Icelandic production company ACT4.
Additional titles to be featured include the South Korean father-daughter crime thriller “Doubt,” the army conscript black comedy “Dorm No. 13” by acclaimed Finnish filmmakers Teemu Nikki and Jani Pösö, who also created Canneseries winner “Mister 8.” Additionally, Beta Film acquisition “Rebound” will be showcased. In the festival’s Docuseries category, “The Nazi Cartel,” directed by Justin Webster known for his focus on Spain/Latin America documentaries, will be presented.
Among the long-form competition titles, six out of eight finalists hail from either the Nordic countries or Belgium, with two each originating from Norway and being broadcast on the Belgian streaming platform Streamz, which features a total of five shows spread across all festival categories.
Lewi finds Norway to be the most innovative TV nation globally, and he’s excited about a special tribute outside of competition featuring shows like ‘The Big Disaster’ and ‘Holy Smokes!’ He highly praises the talents of Willem De Schryver and Mona Mina Leon, both of whom are exceptional.
This year, many significant French broadcasters have titles at Canneseries, led by “Surface,” as compared to fewer French presences in previous years. According to Claire-Marine, Canneseries Deputy Artistic Director, several reasons contribute to this shift. M6 is once again investing heavily in fiction, the series calendar has become more year-round rather than event-specific, and there’s a strong track record for French premieres, particularly last year’s Rendez-vous.
Experts from various roles in the television industry such as producers, writers, distributors, composers, and casting directors will join a panel at the Canneseries event, featuring Jane Trantner (of Bad Wolf), Beau Willimon (“House of Cards”), David Hadda (creator of “The Zweiflers,” which won best series in 2024 Canneseries), and Eric Rochant, who introduced “The Bureau” to the world ten years prior to this year’s Canneseries on April 27, 2015. Lewi stated that Rochant significantly transformed the French television series landscape.
The eighth edition of Canneseries, costing approximately €3.8 million ($4.1 million) and primarily funded by Cannes Town Hall, is set to take place from April 24th to the 29th, with Canal+ serving as its primary media partner.
