‘Legend of Zelda’ Live-Action Film Sets March 2027 Theatrical Release From Sony Pictures

Hi there! Just wanted to share some exciting news. The live-action movie based on “The Legend of Zelda” video game series has finally got a release date. Sony Pictures is all set to premiere this joint production with Nintendo on March 26, 2027. Enjoy the adventure!

The launch date for Nintendo’s new app, Nintendo Today, revealed the release date of the upcoming “Zelda” film last Friday, which was initially announced in November 2023, approximately a year-and-a-half ago. Back then, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the “Zelda” series, disclosed plans for the live-action movie via social media, mentioning that he and Avi Arad would be producing the film.

Wes Ball, who directed “The Maze Runner” series and recently “War for the Planet of the Apes,” continues to be involved in directing the upcoming adaptation. Alongside Joe Hartwick Jr., they are producing under their Oddball Entertainment label. The original announcement also revealed that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo would jointly finance the film, with Nintendo contributing the bulk of the financial support. As for casting and story specifics, those details are still being developed.

Miyamoto here! For quite some time now, I’ve been collaborating with Avi Arad on the live-action adaptation of ‘The Legend of Zelda’. Avi is known for producing numerous blockbuster films. In a previous post, I mentioned that I asked Avi to help produce this movie and we are now moving forward with its development. Excitingly, Nintendo is deeply involved in the production process. Although it will take some time before its release, I’m eager for you all to anticipate watching it.

The momentum for a “Zelda” movie has picked up pace following Nintendo’s collaboration with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment on “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” This animated comedy, released in April 2023, was a massive success at the box office, earning over $1.3 billion globally and currently holding the 18th spot among the highest-grossing films worldwide.
