It’s reported that Elon Musk attempted to exert influence on Reddit CEO Steve Huffman to suppress criticism directed towards him and former President Donald Trump. However, this move hasn’t gone down well with the moderators on the platform. This isn’t a new stance for Musk, as he has previously voiced strong disagreements over content moderation policies. It appears that now, he’s attempting to shape moderation policies on platforms where he doesn’t hold ownership.
AI, bans, and Musk’s power: inside the DOGE Reddit drama
As reported by The Washington Post, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is employing AI technology to handle confidential data from the Department of Education with the goal of reducing expenses. However, this move has sparked concerns regarding data protection and the reliability of AI in managing such sensitive information. Additionally, approximately 100 employees, primarily those focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion matters, were temporarily suspended after an executive order issued by Trump.
When the news broke, the subreddit r/WhitePeopleTwitter erupted with anger, and some users went too far with threatening remarks. Instead of merely moderating these comments, Reddit chose to suspend the entire subreddit for 72 hours. At around the same time, as The Verge reported, Musk was exchanging messages with Reddit CEO Steve Huffman before the ban on r/WhitePeopleTwitter was enforced.
Reddit had previously announced its intention to restrict “violent content,” however, it was not previously known that Elon Musk personally submitted a grievance to the CEO. Additionally, Musk has expressed disbelief over certain subreddits prohibiting link-sharing of X, but it’s uncertain if this issue was raised in his discussions with Steve Huffman.
Currently, following the recent explosion, numerous Reddit users are expressing similar sentiments in reaction to a post in r/collapse, stating… or alternatively, after the incident, many Reddit users have been echoing similar opinions in response to a post in r/collapse, saying…
Advocates of “free speech” support open dialogue only when it aligns with their interests, and they are unwilling to challenge their power or wisdom.

I’ve recently been given a three-day suspension, not due to promoting or supporting violence, but rather for making a hypothetical statement suggesting that the Trump administration may be inflicting harm on detainees.

Haha! We knew this a month ago when people were getting banned left and right.

It’s concerning that Elon Musk may be able to privately persuade the leaders of other companies to interfere with their content decisions, as some comments directed at DOGE employees were perceived as threatening and removed regardless.
