Despite one former team member leaving after nine years, citing that Skyblivion has transitioned from a passion endeavor to a demanding task, the creators of this ambitious mod continue to aim for its release in 2025.
In a nutshell, Skyblivion is an ambitious project that’s been in the works for over a decade. The goal is to reimagine Bethesda Softworks’ Oblivion game using the updated engine from its sequel, Skyrim. But it’s not just about swapping engines; Skyblivion is essentially a complete overhaul of Oblivion. The TESRenewal mod team describes it as a full-scale remake, encompassing new locations, dungeons, music, gameplay improvements, item modifications, and much more.
I apologize for any inconvenience, but it’s necessary actions for a project that is very important to me – Skyblivion.
Or, in a more casual style:
Sorry about that, but it’s crucial steps for a project I really love – Skyblivion.— Dee Keyes (@Keyecomposer) August 30, 2025
On August 30, Dee Keyes, previously a level designer for Skyblivion, publicly expressed concerns about the mod’s development team. In his statement, he claimed that announcing a 2025 release date in 2023 was regrettable and asserted that the project had never been as polished as suggested by the promotional videos.
As per Keyes’ explanation, certain aspects of the game showcased in trailers were given a superficial or “inauthentic” polish by the team, but it was apparent they wouldn’t be able to maintain that level of refinement throughout the entire project. He mentioned that his concerns about this matter were disregarded by those in charge, and he stressed these observations came from a realistic perspective rather than pessimism.
Although we’re working on a voluntary, part-time basis, this project is enormous and requires professional developers. However, our requests for a delay have been disregarded. It’s disheartening to see that even passion projects are being hurried along with developers forced to work excessively.”
Despite working unpaid and part-time, the scale of this project necessitates professional development teams. Yet, our pleas for postponement have been overlooked. It’s unfortunate that even passion projects are being pushed forward at the expense of developers having to work overtime.
Keyes concluded his remark by likening Skyblivion to Game of Thrones’ controversial Season 8, suggesting that the two main developers, including project lead Rebelzize, are pushing for an early release, disregarding the efforts of the entire team to ensure quality work.
Despite Keyes’ specific issues going unanswered, the communication head of the Skyblivion team, Evan Flatt, mentioned on Reddit that they are still striving to launch the project this year in response to a worried fan’s query.
Flatt stated that although our aim is to launch this project by the end of the year, there are still tasks left undone. However, we won’t release Skyblivion until the team feels completely satisfied with its quality – our original plan was to make it ready for release in 2021.
Are we at the point where we can say ‘ready?’ This question has been on our minds because, as with any fan-created project, there comes a time when we have to stop adding new features. Currently, Skyblivion isn’t ready yet, which is why it hasn’t been released. Our goal is to make it ready by the end of this year, but if that doesn’t happen, we will definitely keep you updated.
As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the latest development diary video, titled “The Final Stretch Towards Release.” This intriguing video sought to underscore the significance of our beloved mod amidst the impending launch of the official Oblivion Remastered in April. The team passionately highlighted how Skyblivion isn’t just a mere remake; it’s a complete reimagining of Oblivion, modernizing it to align with contemporary RPG standards.
Just one day after this exciting announcement, the team shared another video, spotlighting the initial 15 minutes of Skyblivion, further emphasizing that our mod is an impressive remake of the classic Oblivion game. The anticipation is palpable!
In the video’s description, Rebelzize said Skyblivion development has been an “uphill battle.”
Rebelzize remarked, “The final stage of development has proved more challenging than all our past years added together.” However, he emphasized, “My team won’t give up until we create a game for everyone’s enjoyment, and neither will I.
Upon its release, Skyblivion can be obtained at no cost by individuals who have already purchased Skyrim: Special Edition and Oblivion: Game of the Year (GOTY) Deluxe on their personal computers.
