On the release of his new album titled “Based on a True Story,” Will Smith doesn’t shy away from discussing the Oscars slap incident involving Chris Rock. The opening track, called “Int. Barbershop — Day,” starts off by stating: “Will Smith has been cancelled.
In this track, I’m raving about the collaboration between DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone, featuring none other than the Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith. The lyrics flow with various voices expressing gossip and opinions, all freestyle, about our beloved actor and rapper. One voice questions, “Who in the world does Will Smith think he is?” To which another voice responds, “I can never forgive him for what he did.
During the 2022 Oscars broadcast, Will Smith found himself in a heated argument after he slapped Chris Rock onstage. The comedian had made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, which upset Smith greatly. As a result, Smith stormed onto the stage and struck Rock in the face. Following the incident, he angrily shouted, “Leave my wife’s name out of your dirty mouth!” Later in the ceremony, Smith returned to the stage to accept his award for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard.
Interior Barbershop – Daytime Scene” addresses the Oscar controversy more explicitly through its lyrics: “I heard he won the Oscar, but had to give it up/ They say they only made him do that because he’s Black.” Yet, Smith did not need to return his Oscar; instead, the Academy imposed a 10-year ban on his attendance at any of their events. Smith also voluntarily relinquished his membership with the Academy and expressed deep regret for his actions, stating that he was “profoundly sorry” for what transpired.
Later in the song, the lyrics allude to Smith’s well-known reaction to Rock’s joke using these words: “They’re both a little eccentric, so what’s this conversation about?/ Be sure to leave Jada’s name out of your dialogue.
The second track “You Lookin’ for Me?” subtly references the ongoing controversy. In this song, Smith raps: “Endured much, now I’m back in the lead/ You’ll need to adjust/ My work remains unmatched and scorching hot/ Even if I don’t receive a nod.” Although his ban from Academy events doesn’t prevent future Oscar nominations, it seems rather improbable.
Smith’s first solo music album in 20 years, titled ‘Based on a True Story’, follows his 2005 release ‘Lost and Found’. Although it’s not his initial major project post the slap incident, Smith has since been involved in other significant projects. For instance, he navigated a restricted promotional phase for his subsequent movie, Apple’s historical drama ‘Emancipation’. Last summer, he teamed up with Martin Lawrence in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’, the fourth installment of Sony’s buddy cop series, which became a global box office success, earning over $400 million.
