Nintendo Quietly Confirmed The Switch 2’s C Button In Nintendo Today Promo

During the release of promotional content for their new Nintendo Today app on Google Play, Nintendo inadvertently disclosed that the enigmatic button on the Switch 2 is labeled as a “C” Button. This revelation took place following the March 2025 Nintendo Direct presentation, where Nintendo also unveiled virtual game cards and revisited Metroid Prime 4. The discovery was made by Twitter and Bluesky user Wario64 who shared an enlarged image of the promotional material for clearer viewing.

After Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 at the beginning of the year, we started pondering the purpose of the enigmatic button. Initially, it appeared as a blank square beneath the “Home” button on the right Joy-Con, which is roughly where the hidden NFC detector was on the original Switch. Since the Switch 2 is slightly bigger than its predecessor, there seems to be enough space for an NFC scanner despite the presence of the mysterious “C” button, leading us to speculate that it may serve a similar function as the Amiibo scanner.

It’s true that we are unsure of the specific function the “C” button might serve. The last Nintendo console featuring a “C” button was the Nintendo 64, which had four such buttons arranged similar to the “ABXY” layout on the current Switch. Many speculations about the purpose of the “C” button have emerged, particularly from Wario64, though most of these suggestions were humorous. One theory that seems plausible is that it could represent ‘Cursor’, if the potential successor of the Switch (Switch 2) allows users to mimic a mouse-like control with the Joy-Con. If this is the case, the “C” button may be responsible for modifying how the Switch 2 interprets Joy-Con input.

Regardless of what happens, we won’t need to wait for too long as Nintendo will be revealing their plans for the Switch 2 and its game launches at a dedicated event scheduled for April 2, 2025.
