When Backyard Baseball was reintroduced last fall for PC as Backyard Baseball ’97, a pixel-perfect reproduction of the original game, it triggered a wave of nostalgia. Remaking the game was quite difficult since the team working on the revival didn’t have access to the original source code. Today, March 27, you can play this classic game on modern platforms that didn’t exist when it first came out – smartphones and tablets, compatible with both iOS and Android operating systems.
Backyard Baseball ’97 has been adapted for mobile devices, offering a touch-screen version of the classic PC game. While there are minor changes such as touch controls replacing keys like ESC for pausing the game, the overall experience remains the same. Just like on PC, it’s also compatible with controllers if you prefer that gaming method. It can be purchased for $5.
The Backyard Sports franchise kicked off in 1997 with Backyard Baseball, followed by multiple spin-offs featuring different sports such as football, soccer, basketball, hockey, and skateboarding. Since then, the series has undergone several revivals, initially transitioning to 3D during the PlayStation 2 era from its original 2D format. Later, in the Xbox 360 era, two exclusive games were released. However, a new installment hasn’t been released since 2015, which saw the production of two mobile-exclusive sequels that were eventually removed from app stores.
Despite the fact that Backyard Baseball ’97, similar to Backyard Soccer ’98, does not showcase real-life professional athletes, certain later games did when they first came out. However, Playground Productions has hinted that some of these players might reappear in future updates as they continue to develop the game.
