17 years following Michael Ledger’s iconic portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, the esteemed Michael Caine has applauded the late actor for his outstanding performance.
Among numerous portrayals of the Joker throughout the years, it’s no wonder Heath Ledger’s interpretation remains a top pick among fans. His maniacal, psychopathic depiction of the Criminal Mastermind Clown has left an undeniable impact on subsequent actors like Jared Leto and Barry Keoghan.
Though he starred in just one superhero film as the villain, Ledger significantly raised the standard for any actor taking on the role of the Joker.
Since then, Michael Caine – a fellow actor in The Dark Knight – has expressed what he admired about Heath Ledger’s acting and also revealed his initial response upon watching it for the first time.
Michael Caine praises Heath Ledger’s Joker
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for his latest memoir, Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over, Michael Caine shared that he was unsure about how Heath Ledger would differentiate his portrayal of the character from Jack Nicholson’s version in 1989’s Batman.
[He] was a delightful individual, incredibly kind-hearted and humble,” he expressed. “I found it intriguing to consider how he would portray the Joker, given that Jack Nicholson’s portrayal had been so memorable.
Instead of relying on witty one-liners, Heath expertly amplified the character’s psychotic aspects. The portrayal of the Joker was profoundly twisted and fractured, although we are not provided with specific reasons for his actions or his true desires.
A significant aspect of Ledger’s metamorphosis involved the iconic Joker’s makeup and twisted grin. The first sight of this left Caine with a vivid memory of its intense chill.
Just as Alfred expressed to Bruce, ‘Some people delight in seeing the world go up in flames.’ That’s how Heath portrayed his character: with smudged makeup, odd hair, and an eerie voice. It sent shivers down my spine the first time I saw him perform – I was genuinely scared!
“Looking back, I think Heath’s excellence made all of us raise our game,” he added.
