Napster sells for $207 Million despite shutting down over 20 years ago

20 years following its permanent closure, file-sharing platform Napster was bought for approximately $207 million by a company specializing in 3D technology.

During the late 1900s, Napster became a widely-used method for music enthusiasts to obtain their favorite tunes without spending a penny. However, its run came to an end in 2001 as a result of ongoing legal disputes.

Over the past 25 years, the brand has continued to exist, though it seems to have slipped from the consciousness of many online users.

The purchase of Napster wasn’t made public until March 25, which happened to be Tuesday, and the amount paid was an astounding $207 Million.

According to CNBC, the 3D technology firm Infinite Reality has taken over Napster, with plans to develop shared 3D virtual spaces where music enthusiasts can jointly experience concerts or listening sessions.

The company also wants to use it as a way for musicians to sell physical and virtual merchandise.

According to CEO John Acunto, when we consider individuals who engage audiences such as influencers or content creators, it’s crucial they have a unified platform that focuses on music and musical communities. Notably, he mentioned there is currently a lack of platforms in the streaming industry catering specifically to music.

“I think there’s no better name than Napster to disrupt.”

The report indicates that Napster retains the rights to stream numerous songs, a collection which has recently been acquired by Infinite Reality.

Word spread quickly on social media about the acquisition, leaving numerous users astonished that such a brand is still operational in the year 2025.

“I didn’t even know it was still around. Oh, the memories,” one user replied.

The user mentioned, “I didn’t realize it was still around. I was kicked off of it years ago for downloading a single Metallica track amusingly enough.

“Whaaaatt? they still existed? and get paid for $207 million?!!!” a third user responded.

This recent multibillion-dollar acquisition has sparked conversations on social media, following PepsiCo’s purchase of the “healthy soda” brand Poppi in March. Fans are now expressing concern about the drink’s future.
