YouTuber creates fully functional ‘Playstacean’ & it’s the cutest thing ever

Have you ever heard about PlayStation? Yes, it’s an outstanding gaming console, but imagine if it was… in the shape of a crab? YouTuber GingerOfOz drew inspiration from the original 1994 design and crafted a ‘Playstacean’, a fully functional version that looks simply adorable.

GingerOfOz frequently tackles projects involving transforming regular game consoles into portable devices, a hobby he enjoys immensely. Occasionally, he even accepts custom work for individuals seeking personalized modifications.

He observed a drawing by artist Ahn Dang depicting a ‘Playstacean’, an inventive blend of words representing the original PlayStation as a crustacean, even featuring claws resembling controllers.

After spotting it, Ginger viewed it as a stimulus for innovation. Consequently, he embarked on the task of constructing a practical model of it with the aim of materializing Dang’s idea. Despite numerous trials and errors, he eventually succeeded in bringing his vision to fruition.

YouTuber turns PlayStation into ‘Playstacean’

Instead of saying that Ginger modified the original PlayStation by attaching crab arms to it, it might be clearer to phrase it as: Ginger didn’t simply add crab-like appendages to a miniaturized version of the PlayStation 1 he had.

Instead, he dismantled his entire console, reduced the size of the motherboard, and crafted unique components for each part. Replicating Dang’s design in its essence while maintaining functionality proved to be quite an intricate task.

To bring this creation to life, he had no choice but to design and put together 56 components, among which 40 were exclusive and crafted by Ginger. This task also required him to perform specialized soldering techniques on the wirings to ensure compatibility with the control systems.

However, he was able to get it done in the end.

Despite the YouTuber’s assertion that the console was playable, they found the controller’s arm design less comfortable due to the placement of the shoulder buttons protruding from the sides instead of being located on the back like standard DualShock controllers. Most pads are designed for fingers to wrap around the shoulder buttons for a reason, and this design seems to be an exception to that norm.

Speaking of which, GingerOfOz mentioned that despite the unconventional design of this console, he’s so pleased with its appearance that he’s hardly disappointed by its less intuitive layout.

Despite all my complaints, they’re virtually forgotten when I see this person. He’s been out of sight for some time, but while preparing this video, I still find myself frequently drawn to look at him in admiration.
