This year, the American Film Institute is inviting submissions for their Cinematography Intensive Workshop.

The AFI Cinematography Intensive Workshop, organized by Panavision, will be happening on the AFI Campus in Los Angeles from May 29th to June 1st this year.
The program was established by Stephen Lighthill, Head of Cinematography Discipline at the prestigious AFI Conservatory, who is also part of the Innovative Programs department. Lighthill expressed his delight, saying, “It’s a privilege to guide this unique educational opportunity for cinematographers eager to hone their skills and advance in their artistic journey.” He further thanked the skilled faculty members at AFI Cinematography and special guests for their ongoing backing of this influential project and dedication to nurturing budding visual storytellers.
The event is a complimentary, four-day course tailored for budding cinematographers who are serious about building a professional career in the field.
In this workshop, CIW attendees engage in practical sessions focusing on cinematography basics, scrutinize selected works by expert cinematographers, and learn strategies to secure real-world set experience. The program is open to 20 applicants who show enthusiasm for visual storytelling, possess prior set experience, and seek further training to enhance their knowledge, skills, and professional growth.
Kim Snyder, head of Panavision, expressed pride in Panavision’s ongoing sponsorship of the AFI Cinematography Intensive Workshop. She added that this workshop isn’t merely a training course; it fosters a cooperative atmosphere where budding cinematographers can network, share knowledge, and polish their abilities, thereby boosting their careers and enriching the movie industry with greater diversity and vitality.
The Cinema Industry Workshop (CIW) was initially established in the year 2018. Since then, it has hosted a variety of esteemed cinematographers, faculty, and alumni from the AFI Conservatory as guest speakers and instructors. Among them are Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who worked on “Loki”, Ava Berkofsky from “Insecure”, Polly Morgan known for her work in “The Woman King”, and many others.
