I had the pleasure of being part of the initial rollout of Barco’s latest top-tier HDR laser projectors, as they were installed at two premier cinemas – Cinepolis Pico Rivera in Los Angeles County and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema New Mission in San Francisco. These debuts coincided with the release of Paramount’s “Novocaine.” Notably, the Pico Rivera location was the first Cinepolis MACRO XE premium auditorium to open in the United States.
With the launch of Barco’s latest projectors, a selection of upcoming films tailored for the system will be unveiled. These include “A Working Man,” a David Ayer-directed thriller from Amazon MGM Studios (released March 28); “A Minecraft Movie,” a game-to-film adaptation by Legendary, Warner Bros., and Microsoft (set for April 4); “Warfare,” written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and helmed by Alex Garland of “Civil War” fame for A24 (scheduled for April 11); and the Ben Affleck-led sequel “The Accountant 2” from Amazon MGM (to be released on April 25).
Novocaine” is also being screened in High Dynamic Range (HDR) at three cinemas that took part in the Barco HDR pilot program last fall. These include B&B Theatres Red Oak 12 in Dallas, Regal Dania Pointe in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, and Regal Times Square in New York.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the stunning visuals produced by Barco laser projectors, particularly their HDR technology. In essence, this innovation is all about manipulating light, enabling the projector to dynamically adjust and redistribute it for an extraordinary cinematic experience. This unique “light steering” ability results in a wider range of contrast between the most brilliant highlights in daylit scenes and the darkest shadows in dimly lit sequences, thereby elevating the overall visual quality of films.
Last year, it was piloted in collaboration with Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment for “Transformers One,” Dreamworks Animation and Universal’s “The Wild Robot,” the sequel to Paramount’s “Smile,” Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Joker: Folie À Deux,” and Amazon MGM Studios’ “Red One.
Barco’s laser projectors with HDR technology are set to be showcased at the upcoming CinemaCon event, starting from March 31 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
