Severance Season 2 Finale Shocks Fans With Mark’s Ultimate Betrayal and Cold Harbor Test

In a surprising twist at the end of Season 2, someone other than Gemma was chosen to carry out Lumon’s intention for Cold Harbor – namely, Mark S. (Spoiler alert follows…)

To this point, Cold Harbor has been somewhat enigmatic. We’ve known it to be Mark’s last MDR file, we’ve known it to be Gemma’s last location, and we’ve known that immediately after its completion, Gemma would meet her end.

In the final episode of Severance Season 2, Mark completes the file, which elevates him to being “one of the most significant individuals in history” (as robot Kier claims). As Gemma walks into the room, she’s wearing clothes from the day she passed away. Her assignment involves disassembling a baby crib – the same one that Outie Mark had bought her before she suffered a miscarriage.

Even though this situation is emotionally charged for the Gemma Innie activated in Cold Harbor, it appears to feel absolutely no discomfort or pain whatsoever. Dr. Mauer tells Jamie, “The protection is effective. She feels nothing… it’s remarkable.” However, she’s not alone in this sensation.

Severance Season 2 ending sees Mark pass the test

Despite Gemma being the main subject throughout, it’s Mark who excels remarkably in the end, as he selects Helly during Severance Season 2 Episode 10.

When he goes to the test area, his Outie becomes active and rescues Gemma before she’s fully processed in Cold Harbor. They share a kiss inside the elevator and then proceed to the disconnected floor, where their Innies become active.

Mark manages to guide Ms. Casey to the stairwell, transforming her into Gemma there. However, prior to leaving himself, he spots Helly down the corridor.

Although Gemma pleaded for him to go with her while she cried and screamed, Mark decided to remain with Helly instead. The two then vanished into the uncharted territory together.

At that instant, Lumon’s experiment shows positive results (though it may not be clear to the somewhat eerie figure of Jamie Eagan just yet).

Mark, formerly consumed by sorrow, experiences no emotional turmoil regarding his moments with Gemma. Instead, an innate drive pushes him towards progressing with Helly.

A spectator pointed out the importance of the scene when they turned to Reddit for discussion. They explained, “The Cold Harbor episode seemed to be exploring if the barrier could withstand pressure and whether a separated individual wouldn’t feel what their ‘Outie’ would experience.

Among everyone, it was iMark who aced the test and ended up unfazed by Gemma at the entrance of the stairs.

The other person responded, ‘This implies that Mark may have focused more on self-improvement rather than improving Gemma. Let’s spend the next 18 months pondering.’

In the final scene, there’s also a hint of this feeling when Mark saves Gemma from Cold Harbor; she senses intuitively and subtly that he is someone trustworthy.

At the tail-end of Season 1, Ms. Casey expressed during a therapy session that she had often found a particular sense of ease in the presence of Mark.

As a gamer, I never gave off the same vibes or shared any similar feelings with Ms. Casey during our wellness sessions, unlike how Burt and Irv seem to interact. The usual sense of familiarity just wasn’t there between us.

“In the Cold Harbor room, she instinctively realizes after a few minutes that he is a safe person.”

Some people disagree with this idea, but here’s an opposing viewpoint: “I suspect Innie Mark might have had feelings for Gemma towards the end, yet his feelings for Helly were far more intense.
