Prepare for pain. Painkiller remake gets a Fall 2025 release window

Today’s Future Games Show Spring Showcase unveiled a grand total of fifty-five games during a two-hour livestream event. If you’re interested in catching the entire spectacle, feel free to do so, but for a quick recap, take a look at this article and more at Gamepressure. Towards the end of the presentation, there was an unexpected surprise – a long-dormant franchise was revived once again.

Painkiller remake is being created by Saber and 3D Realms, planned for Fall 2025

Towards the culmination of the presentation, Painkiller – an initial first-person shooter developed by People Can Fly (who were also showcased today) – was unveiled. This new version is being spearheaded by Saber Interactive (known for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and 3D Realms (creators of Duke Nukem). The remake will offer a complete cooperative gameplay experience as announced in the trailer. The original Painkiller game was launched way back in 2004, marking over two decades since its release.

From the preview, it seems that certain parts of the initial plot will stay consistent. In the story, a character finds himself in limbo and makes a pact with Lucifer’s forces to wage war in hell, hoping for entry into heaven. The trailer showcases an array of weapons, including grenade launchers and lightning guns, as the protagonist battles numerous types of adversaries. At the end of the sneak peek, it was hinted that the game will be available by Fall 2025, so fans won’t have to wait too long for this remake.

The combination of Saber Interactive and 3D Realms appears to be an ideal match for this remake. In fact, earlier this year, the action enthusiasts were captivated by Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, which even received a nomination for Best Action Game at the Game Awards. Given that this game is heavily influenced by boomer-shooters, it would be fantastic to have 3D Realms contributing to the project as well.

At the moment, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for further updates on the upcoming Painkiller. With Summer Game Fest approaching and a possible fall release date in sight, it appears that we might get more information about this game during one of those summer events. The gaming world is brimming with anticipation as there are plenty of intriguing games to look forward to.
