Global Cinema Study Reveals What Moviegoers Really Want: More Comedies and Thrillers!

Globally, it seems people are eager for more comedy and suspense movies at the cinema, as indicated by a recent poll conducted by the Global Cinema Foundation. However, the main issue preventing people from visiting cinemas more frequently is the scarcity of compelling films, the research suggests.

In a survey across fifteen different global markets, over 68,000 individuals were asked about their thoughts on going to the cinema. An impressive 72% of them agreed that visiting a theater is worth the cost. Interestingly, 55% expressed a desire for more action/adventure films, even though there’s already quite a bit of this genre being shown in cinemas. On the other hand, while movies like the international sensation “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” have predominantly shifted to streaming platforms, particularly in North America, 51% of cinema-goers still yearn for more comedies on the big screen. Additionally, 46% of respondents expressed a preference for seeing more suspense/thriller movies in theaters.

Older moviegoers (aged 45 and above) expressed the highest level of dissatisfaction regarding the current selection of engaging films in cinemas, perhaps due to their availability and eagerness to watch. Interestingly, though, 68% of patrons showed enthusiasm for the upcoming movies, while a substantial 83% of younger viewers (under 34) are equally enthused about what’s coming next.

Older moviegoers (aged 45 and up) seemed to be the least satisfied with the available line-up of compelling films in theaters, possibly because they have the time and interest to attend screenings. However, it’s worth noting that 68% of customers are looking forward to the upcoming movies, while a significant 83% of younger viewers (aged under 34) are equally eager for what’s coming up next.

The research revealed that about 64% of viewers find no obstacles to going to the cinema if there’s a film they desire to watch, whereas just 6% opt to delay viewing and stream instead, based on the survey results.

Overall, it appears that younger consumers (under 44) have been increasing their spending on entertainment compared to half a year ago, while the majority of customers have reduced their spending in this area.

Established to bolster a thriving international cinema scene, the GCF’s governing body comprises CEOs from the leading 12 movie theater corporations globally, alongside Cinema United (previously known as NATO) and UNIC. The Consultative Board encompasses 75 movie theater companies and 29 associations, collectively accounting for approximately 65-70% of global box office revenues.

Jane Hastings, as the Chairperson of GCF, stated, “One key objective for our organization is to distribute global audience perspectives throughout the film industry. This allows us to collectively adapt more effectively to customer preferences. The common discussion revolves around boosting cinema attendance, and it’s evident that showing films customers are eager to watch will encourage this. Our patrons confirm they face no obstacles in visiting the cinema when there is an appealing movie on offer. There’s a significant chance to satisfy this demand, thereby boosting both attendance and frequency. Moreover, we aim to highlight the global investment in enhancing cinema experiences, which contributes to rising ticket prices and record-breaking box office earnings worldwide.
